Full Job Description

JPosition Summary

The Compounding Pharmacy Operations Manager is a non-pharmacist leadership role responsible for the day-to-day administrative, operational, and technical support functions of a compounding pharmacy. This position oversees workflow, staff performance, compliance with USP standards, and quality assurance processes while supporting sterile, non-sterile, and hazardous compounding activities under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist.

This role does not replace or perform duties reserved for a licensed pharmacist but requires advanced technical knowledge and hands-on competency in compounding procedures, cleanroom operations, and hazardous drug handling.

This role is non-pharmacist and does not perform duties restricted to licensed pharmacists, such as final prescription verification, clinical judgment, or counseling. All compounding activities are conducted in accordance with state and federal regulations and under appropriate pharmacist oversight.

Key Responsibilities

1. Operational Management

Oversee daily pharmacy operations including workflow coordination, staffing schedules, and productivity metrics.
Ensure efficient prescription intake, compounding workflow, labeling, and delivery coordination.
Implement and monitor KPIs (turnaround time, error rates, patient satisfaction, etc.).
Manage inventory levels, procurement, and vendor relationships for API ingredients and supplies.
Lead continuous process improvement initiatives and lean workflow optimization.

2. Compounding Oversight (Technical Execution)

Performed within regulatory allowances and under pharmacist supervision as required by law.

Perform and/or supervise preparation of:
Non-sterile compounded medications (USP <795>)
Sterile compounded medications (USP <797>)
Hazardous medications (USP <800>)
Maintain competency in aseptic technique, gowning, and cleanroom behavior.
Ensure proper use and maintenance of compounding equipment (hoods, isolators, balances, etc.).
Execute environmental monitoring, cleaning, and disinfecting procedures.
Support media fill testing, gloved fingertip sampling, and staff competency validation.

3. Compliance & Quality Assurance

Ensure adherence to:
USP <795>, <797>, <800>
State Board of Pharmacy rules
FDA guidance (as applicable to 503A/503B operations)
Maintain SOPs, policies, and documentation for compounding, safety, and infection control.
Lead audit readiness (internal, board inspections, accreditation bodies such as PCAB).
Investigate and document deviations, errors, and CAPA (Corrective and Preventive Actions).
Ensure proper hazardous drug handling, storage, and disposal protocols.

4. Staff Leadership & Training

Supervise pharmacy technicians and compounding personnel.
Train staff in:
Compounding techniques
USP compliance standards
Safety procedures
Customer service expectations
Conduct competency assessments and performance evaluations.
Foster a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous learning.

5. Safety & Risk Management

Oversee infection control and environmental safety programs.
Ensure compliance with PPE requirements and hazardous drug safety standards.
Monitor incidents and implement corrective actions to reduce risk.
Maintain OSHA compliance and workplace safety standards.

6. Administrative & Business Functions

Support budgeting, cost containment, and financial performance goals.
Assist with reporting metrics to leadership (production, quality, compliance).
Collaborate with pharmacists, providers, and leadership on service line expansion.
Assist in technology optimization (pharmacy systems, compounding software, automation).

Required Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent (associate or bachelor’s degree preferred).
Active Pharmacy Technician registration/certification (CPhT) required (or eligible).
Minimum 3+ years of experience in compounding pharmacy, including sterile compounding.
Demonstrated hands-on competency in:
Sterile compounding (USP <797>)
Non-sterile compounding (USP <795>)
Hazardous drug handling (USP <800>)
Minimum 2–3 years of supervisory or leadership experience in a pharmacy setting.

Preferred Qualifications

Advanced certification (e.g., CSPT – Certified Sterile Preparation Technician).
Experience in 503A or 503B compounding environments.
Experience preparing for or participating in Board of Pharmacy or PCAB inspections.
Knowledge of cleanroom design, engineering controls, and environmental monitoring programs.

Familiarity with pharmacy management systems and compounding documentation software.

Pay: $35.00 - $40.00 per hour
