The embryologist provides day-to-day coverage of the embryology lab, and reporting of therapeutic patient results. This position requires weekend & holiday coverage of the lab according to a rotating schedule. The embryologist must be able to work in a team environment. This position requires rigorous QA & QC, and extreme care & caution in labeling and handling of eggs, sperm & embryos. Knowledge of embryo culture & sterile technique as well as knowledge of embryology is preferred for this position. The embryologist’s prime responsibility is to safely and accurately perform all lab procedures to produce consistently high pregnancy rates. The individual must be able to analyze and interpret data. Competence in modifying and updating selected procedures is expected. Embryologists are responsible for maintaining the laboratory in a constant state of readiness to pass inspection and remain licensed and certified by the regulatory agencies.
Qualifications: The embryologist must fulfill the following qualifications:
1. Possess a current license issued by the state in which the laboratory is located, if such licensing is required
2. Have a bachelor’s or master’s degree in chemical, physical, biological, medical technology, clinical or reproductive laboratory science from an accredited institution
3. The candidate must have documented training that includes performing, at a minimum, at least 60 ART procedures under supervision. In addition to meeting these requirements, the embryologist should:
a. Obtain at least 12 hours of continuing education annually in assisted reproductive technology or clinical laboratory practice
b. Perform at least 20 ART procedures per year
Responsibilities:
1. Safely and accurately perform lab procedures
2. Identify, assess and culture oocytes
3. Prepare semen specimens for insemination
4. Micromanipulation techniques including ICSI, TESE and AHA
5. Confirm fertilization and perform embryo culture
6. Assess and select embryos for transfer
7. Embryo transfer
8. Embryo cryopreservation and thawing
9. Egg cryopreservation and thawing
10. Embryo biopsy and tubing of cells
11. Media preparation
12. Sterile technique
13. Maintain equipment
14. Maintain liquid nitrogen tanks
15. Maintain and test alarm system as regularly as scheduled
16. Inventory, stocking and ordering of supplies
17. Review all results daily
18. Quality control, quality assurance and safety procedures
19. Record and report laboratory results into EMR in a timely manner
20. As instructed by embryology lab supervisor, report all relevant embryology results to national database, specifically the Society of Assisted Reproductive Technology (SART) and/or any other required reporting in a timely manner
21. As instructed by embryology lab supervisor,compile yearly statistics for both QC and patient information in QA dashboard in a timely manner
22. As instructed by embryology lab supervisor,maintain regular cryopreserved embryo send-outs in a timely manner
23. Active participation in proficiency testing programs
24. Embryology lab coverage in conjunction with embryology lab supervisor and senior embryologist
25. Weekend coverage when necessary and in rotation
26. Maintain patient confidentiality
27. Perform duties as assigned by embryology lab supervisor
28. Hold memberships and participate in professional development
