Lead Painter – Residential & Light Commercial
Join Local Handyman of the Mid-South and help us build our growing painting business while delivering high-quality work our customers are proud to have in their homes.
About Us
Local Handyman of the Mid-South is a growing residential and light commercial handyman and home improvement company serving the greater Memphis and Mid-South area. We focus on professionalism, reliability, quality workmanship, and building long-term customer relationships.
We are continuing to expand our painting services and are looking for an experienced painter who takes pride in doing things the right way. We value craftsmanship, attention to detail, a clean and professional job site, and treating every customer's home or business with care.
We're looking for someone who brings solid painting experience but is also willing to learn, grow, and work as part of a team as we continue building our painting operation.
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Lead Painter to perform and help lead residential and light commercial painting projects throughout the Memphis and Mid-South area.
This is a hands-on painting position. The Lead Painter will work directly on projects while also helping ensure that jobs are completed efficiently, professionally, and to our quality standards. Depending on the project, you may work independently, alongside another experienced technician, or lead a helper or small crew.
This position will initially be part-time, with the potential to grow into a full-time role as our painting business and project volume continue to expand.
We're looking for someone who understands that a professional paint job is about much more than putting paint on a wall. Proper preparation, clean lines, consistent coverage, protection of the customer's property, attention to detail, and leaving a clean job site are all essential parts of the job.
Compensation
$25.00–$30.00 per hour, depending on professional painting experience, demonstrated skill level, leadership ability, and overall capabilities.
This is a W-2 position.
What You'll Be Doing
- Perform high-quality interior and exterior residential and light commercial painting
- Prepare surfaces properly before painting, including cleaning, scraping, sanding, patching, filling nail holes, caulking, and other appropriate preparation
- Perform minor drywall and surface repairs associated with painting projects
- Paint walls, ceilings, doors, trim, baseboards, and other interior and exterior surfaces
- Cut clean lines and produce consistent, professional finishes using brushes and rollers
- Properly mask, cover, and protect floors, furniture, fixtures, landscaping, and other customer property
- Help plan the sequence of work and organize materials and equipment for efficient project execution
- Evaluate surfaces and identify preparation or repair issues that could affect the finished product
- Maintain clean, organized, and professional job sites throughout the project—not just at completion
- Work independently when appropriate and provide direction to helpers or other technicians when assigned to a project
- Communicate professionally with customers regarding project progress, questions, and expectations
- Document work through photos and company mobile applications
- Perform final quality checks and address touch-ups before considering a project complete
- Follow company safety procedures and maintain safe work practices
Skills & Experience We're Looking For
- 3+ years of professional painting experience preferred, particularly residential painting
- Demonstrated ability to produce high-quality finished work
- Strong knowledge of painting preparation, application techniques, and finishing practices
- Experience painting walls, ceilings, trim, doors, and other common residential surfaces
- Strong brush and roller skills, including the ability to cut clean lines
- Experience with drywall patching, caulking, sanding, and other common paint-preparation work
- Understanding of primers, paints, sheens, and appropriate applications
- Strong attention to detail and willingness to correct imperfections rather than simply work around them
- Ability to work efficiently without sacrificing quality
- Ability to evaluate a project and determine the appropriate sequence of preparation and painting
- Ability to work independently and take ownership of assigned projects
- Ability and willingness to lead or assist less-experienced team members when needed
- Professional communication and customer-service skills
- Willingness to learn and follow company processes and quality standards
- Reliable transportation
- Valid driver's license
- Current auto insurance
- Authorized to work in the United States
- Comfortable using smartphones and mobile applications
- Ability to safely lift approximately 50 pounds and perform physical work indoors and outdoors, including working from ladders
Experience with paint sprayers is a plus but is not required. Experience with staining, refinishing, exterior wood repair, trim carpentry, drywall repair, or other complementary skills is also a plus.
Tools & Equipment
Candidates should have standard hand tools commonly used by professional painters. Company tools, ladders, specialty equipment, and other project-specific equipment may be provided or available depending on the project.
Schedule & Availability
This is initially a part-time position with the potential to become full-time as our painting services continue to grow.
Work will primarily be scheduled Monday through Friday during normal daytime business hours. Weekly hours may vary based on project demand and scheduling.
Candidates should have reasonable weekday availability and the flexibility to work on painting projects that may run for multiple consecutive days.
Major holidays off.
Growth Opportunities
This position includes a 90-day introductory period intended to provide feedback and ensure a strong mutual fit.
