The Position
Our library is a vibrant hub of education, technology, and community connection. We are seeking a highly organized and customer-focused Assistant Library Clerk to help keep our resources accessible, support daily operations, and provide welcoming service to our patrons.
There is one (1) vacancy in the Library & Cultural Services Department assigned to the Mission Viejo Library. This position is primarily scheduled to work: Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.; Sunday from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.; Wednesday from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.; and Thursday from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The schedule may change to cover absences of coworkers and for department programming needs. The actual work schedule will be based on the needs of the City for the particular work week. The City of Mission Viejo Library is typically open to the public: Monday through Thursday, 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.; Friday, 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.; Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; and Sunday, 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Assistant Library Clerks are considered at-will Hourly, Seasonal, and/or Temporary variable hour employees, and are not a part of the competitive service. Incumbents will work a flexible schedule, with an average of 12 to 19 hours per week, with increased scheduling during peak workload periods, but less than 1,000 hours during the assignment through the fiscal year starting July 1st and ending June 30th. This is an FLSA non-exempt position and is entitled to overtime if an employee works more than forty (40) hours per week.

Promote positive relationships with the public, management team, fellow staff members, and volunteers;

Provide the highest of standards of customer service, information, and communication to the public while upholding promoting the Library’s programs and policies;

Serve at circulation desk; charge and discharge library materials and issue library cards; collect fines for overdue materials and fees for lost or damaged items;

Identify overdue and damaged materials;

Search shelves for overdue, missing or lost materials;

Respond to patrons in person, on the telephone, via email, and text regarding library information, library materials or services, and refer them to the appropriate sources of information;

Deliver materials to patrons at curbside pickup;

Tally daily cash receipts and prepare reports; and
-
Perform other duties as assigned.

IDEAL CANDIDATE:

Able to work an average of 12 to 19 hours per week;

Knowledge of applications of automated library circulation system;

Knowledge of basic arithmetic principles and cash handling;

Knowledge of techniques for providing a high level of customer service to the public and City staff;

Possess experience accessing, retrieving, entering and updating information using a computer terminal;

Strong work experience working independently with minimal supervision;

Ability to interact and work with people from varying age groups and diverse backgrounds;

Learn, understand, and apply library policies and procedures; and

Good oral and written communications skills.
