Process Engineer — SMT

IED Group is an Electronic Manufacturing Services (EMS) provider based in Southern California, delivering turnkey contract manufacturing for simple analog, complex digital, and sensitive RF products. Position Summary

We are seeking an SMT Process Engineer with hands-on experience on Hanwha (formerly Samsung Techwin) pick-and-place equipment to own and continuously improve our surface-mount manufacturing process. In this role you will develop and document SMT processes, program and optimize our Hanwha placement machines, lead new product introduction (NPI), and drive yield, throughput, and reliability across a high-mix, Class 3 production floor. You will be the technical authority on the SMT line — the person who makes the process capable, repeatable, and better — working closely with production, quality, and our process technicians.

Key Responsibilities

Develop, document, and optimize the full SMT process — solder-paste printing, placement, and reflow — for new and existing products.
Create, edit, and optimize placement programs on Hanwha pick-and-place machines (SM471 / SM481 / SM482 PLUS and Decan series), including offline programming from CAD/Gerber data, feeder setup optimization, and cycle-time balancing.
Develop and validate reflow thermal profiles and solder-paste stencil designs to meet IPC-A-610 / J-STD-001 Class 3 requirements.
Lead new product introduction (NPI): first-article builds, process validation, and design-for-manufacturability (DFM) feedback to customers and design teams.
Drive root-cause analysis and corrective action (CAPA) on placement, print, and reflow defects using data from SPI, AOI, and X-ray (AXI) inspection.
Improve yield, throughput, and equipment uptime through structured problem solving.
Create and maintain work instructions, process documentation, routings, and control plans.
Evaluate, justify, and support installation of new SMT equipment, tooling, and fixtures.
Provide technical direction to SMT operators and process technicians; support production in resolving line issues.

Requirements

3+ years of SMT process engineering experience in an electronics / contract manufacturing environment (5+ preferred).
Hands-on experience programming and optimizing Hanwha (Samsung Techwin) pick-and-place machines — SM/Decan series — including offline programming.
Strong working knowledge of SMT processes: stencil printing, solder paste, placement, and reflow profiling.
Proficiency interpreting SPI, AOI, and X-ray inspection data to diagnose and resolve defects.
Working knowledge of IPC-A-610 and J-STD-001 (Class 3 high-reliability preferred).
Ability to read schematics, assembly drawings, and BOMs.
Experience with root-cause / corrective-action tools and continuous-improvement methods (Lean, Six Sigma, 8D).
Strong ESD-safe practices and attention to detail.

ITAR / U.S. Person Requirement

This position requires access to information and technology controlled under the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR). Applicants must be a “U.S. Person” as defined by ITAR (22 CFR § 120.62) — i.e., a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, lawful permanent resident (green card holder), or a protected individual under 8 U.S.C. § 1324b(a)(3). Candidates must be able to provide documentation confirming U.S. Person status. Employment is contingent upon meeting these requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

Formal Hanwha / Samsung equipment training or certification.
Experience with additional SMT platforms (Fuji, Yamaha, Juki, Panasonic, ASM/Siplace) and reflow/profiling tools (e.g., ECD).
Experience in an AS9100 aerospace/defense or other high-reliability manufacturing environment.
Familiarity with RF and high-density interconnect (HDI) assemblies.
