Full Job Description

This is administrative and technical work involving responsibility for planning, coordinating and directing overall public works department. The work is performed under administrative direction of the Mayor and with the advice of the Board of Public Works. General supervision is exercised over the activities of all subordinate public works employees. Does related work as required.

Typical Work Activities:

Plans and directs the construction of new streets and reconstruction and maintenance of existing streets, curbing, culverts and bridges;

Plans and directs the installation, maintenance and repair of sewer lines;

Supervises the performance of all contracts for public works and improvements and certifies the amounts due and payable thereunder;

Plans and directs street cleaning, snow removal and ice control;

Prepares departmental budget and directs the maintenance of budget control;

Drafts specifications for and recommends the purchase of equipment; machinery, materials, tools and other supplies;

Directs the preparation and maintenance of a variety of activity, cost, personnel, statistical and related records and reports;

Attends meetings and conferences to assist in the formulation of policy relating to public works activities;

Reviews and adjusts complaints regarding public works projects and activities;

Plans and coordinates public work programs and projects with other city and public and private entities and functions.

Work Hours:

Full-time, 40+ hours per week, with benefits

Salary:

Based on experience

Minimum Qualifications:

Either:

(a) Graduation from a regionally accredited or NYS registered college or university with a Bachelor's Degree or higher in engineering (or eligibility for examination by the State of New York for a Professional Engineer's license) and two (2) years of supervisory experience in civil engineering or public works construction; OR

(b) Graduation from a regionally accredited or NYS registered college with an Associates' Degree or higher in engineering or construction technology or closely related field and four (4) years of experience in civil engineering or public works construction at least two years of which must have been in a supervisory capacity; OR

NOTE: Degree must have been awarded by a college or university accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education/U.S. Secretary of Education. If the degree was awarded by an educational institution outside of the United States and its territories, applicant must provide independent verification of equivalency. A list of acceptable companies who provide this service can be found at http://www.cs.ny.gov/jobseeker/cfm. Applicants must pay the required evaluation fee.

Special Requirement:

Possession of a New York State Driver's License.
