JOB TITLE: Registered Veterinary Technician (Community Medicine RVT)

WORK RELATIONSHIPS: Clinic Surgeon, Clinic Manager, Senior Director of Clinic Operations, Executive Director, Staff and Volunteers
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: This position is full-time. Preference for candidates who are proficient and comfortable with high-grade dental cleanings and/or have high volume spay neuter experience.
KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY: This position encompasses two key areas of responsibility: general veterinary technician duties and specific duties associated with dentistry.
Job Summary:
General veterinary technician duties, induction of anesthesia for surgical patients and collaborates with surgeons and staff on patient care.
Job Description:
The job of the Registered Veterinary Technician (R.V.T.) includes many generalized veterinary technician duties as well as very specific duties performed by only the R.V.T. Preference for extensive experience with high-grade dental prophylaxis including dental extractions. This job is highly detail oriented and can be repetitive in nature. In this position, the R.V.T. oversees and ensures the quality of care of each patient that passes through CAMP. The R.V.T. will interact with the public on a daily basis as well as handling patients that come into the clinic while inducing them for surgery/procedures & monitoring. This position requires the ability to multi-task specific technical duties as well as directing staff in animal care before and aer surgery. It is necessary in this position to be able to supervise, train and cross train staff members as well as volunteers. Additionally, it is essential to be able to speak knowledgeably to clients about responsible animal ownership as well as procedures, vaccine protocols, other CAMP protocols and animal education issues. At all times, this position requires the R.V.T. to provide quality service to clients, patients and staff and to represent CAMP in a courteous and professional manner.
Specific Dental Technician Duties:
Dentals will be performed under the supervision of the on site DVM, and the dental technician will collaborate with the DVM to make a plan for the day.
The dental technician should have some familiarity with:
Cleaning/polishing teeth
Single/double rooted tooth extraction
Suturing gingiva
Experience with dental x-ray is welcomed but not required. On the job training offered if unfamiliar with dental x-ray.
It is imperative as a CAMP employee that a positive and constructive attitude is always present while on shift with CAMP. Additionally, merit raises are based on taking initiative and generating ideas that will move CAMP toward achieving the organizationʼs vision, mission and goals.
Specific Registered Veterinary Technician Duties
● Handle and log controlled substances properly and responsibly.
● Maintain and reconcile controlled substance logs.
● Calculate drug dosages based on weight and given parameters.
● Complete dental prophylaxis including dental extractions under supervision of veterinarian
● Properly fill out patient paperwork and ensure correct procedures are performed on patients.
● Accurately and efficiently administer intravenous injection of controlled substance to induce anesthesia in dogs and cats.
● Administer additional required injections and perform other required procedures as directed by the surgeon.
● Intubate induced surgical candidate with appropriately sized endotracheal tube and attach to anesthetic machine.
● Accurately assess patient anesthetic depth and adjust anesthesia accordingly i.e. ʻbagging patientʼ, deep pain stimulus test etc
● Monitor anesthetized patients and maintain surgical anesthetic plane of anesthesia while the patient is prepped for surgery and moved into the surgical suite.
● Execute all other duties as requested by surgeon including blood
draws, catheter placement, administering fluids I.V. and SQ applying pressure wraps to various parts of an animal etc
● Field questions from staff and public and reach decisions about patient care both pre and post operatively.
General Vet Technician Duties:
● Collect animal from owner, tag and complete paperwork
● Answer questions from clients about surgical procedures and CAMP protocols
● Conduct pre-surgical exams assuring animals are able to undergo anesthesia safely
● Restrain animals for various procedures including blood draws, catheter placement and physical exam by veterinarian
● Administer injections through multiple routes; iv, im, sq
● Perform various treatments as directed by veterinarian
● Perform emergency care including CPR
● Set up a station in anticipation of the surgical needs for the day.
● Clean area at end of surgery
● Assist in cleaning entire clinic aer surgery
● Release patients to clients and inform of post surgical care
● Teach and train current and new employees
● Work with volunteers
● Work with shelter animals and know shelter animal procedures
● Other duties as assigned
Qualifications: Registered Veterinary Technician or related field, or equivalent work experience, is required, Bilingual in Spanish a plus, Readily able to work closely with animals who are behaviorally and/or medically compromised.
Employee must be able to report to work as scheduled and maintain attendance consistent with clinic staffing requirements. This position requires physical presence at the CAMP clinic and cannot be performed via remote or hybrid arrangement.
Language: English (Required); Bilingual in Spanish a plus.
Education and Work Experience: Bachelors, High School Diploma (Required) Registered Veterinary Technician (Required)
