Full Job Description

Polk County has an opening for a full-time Clerk Typist Cashier III position in the Sheriff's Office. Responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, intermediate technical work processing gun permits, records requests and civil process files, updating office inventory and training records, data entry, and clerical support activities to assist in maintaining records and reports within the Sheriff's Office. This position may also provide clerical support for Emergency Management functions. Applicants must possess a high school diploma and moderate experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Position requires good judgement, tact, and courtesy in dealing with internal and external customers. A valid driver's license is required. Position closes Wednesday, June 17, 2026. EOE

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or ability required. Essential Duties:

Performs data entry duties by gathering information; checking and verifying data for entry into computer; entering and retrieving various data into databases; and generating various reports.
Creates and maintains case files including jail files and protection and harassment orders by assembling file for each incident report, typing and including summary lists; and updating files with additional reports, pictures, etc.
Provides information to the department staff, the general public and other agencies concerning reports, accidents, and records checks, and calculates and collects any required fees.
Performs various clerical duties including greeting visitors; answering phones; making copies; typing correspondence and documents; transcribing tape-recorded statements; and ordering office supplies.
Processes applications for handgun permits by obtaining criminal and driving history information and forwarding for permit issue.
Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge Required:

Knowledge of data processing methods, information storage and retrieval techniques.
Knowledge of departmental and county policies and practices.
Knowledge of general clerical/office practices and procedures including basic office work-flow procedures.

Skills & Abilities Required:

Must be able to read, write and communicate in English.
Skill in the operation of basic office equipment and machines, including computer, fax/copy machines, scanning equipment, etc.
Proficiency in working with basic computer/technology software and programs.
Skills in document writing, recordkeeping, data processing and organization of details is critical.
Skills in communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.
Must have good judgement, tact and courtesy in dealing with internal and external customers.

Education and Experience

High school diploma or GED and moderate experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Physical Requirements

This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds of force; work regularly requires sitting, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms and repetitive motions, frequently requires standing, walking and stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling and occasionally requires climbing or balancing, pushing or pulling and lifting; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, operating machines and observing general surroundings and activities; work has no exposure to environmental conditions; work is generally in a quiet location (e.g. library, private offices).
