JOB SUMMARY:
Is responsible for the safe and orderly transportation of students on assigned routes of the Birdville ISD. Operates a school bus that transports students and other authorized personnel to and from schools or designated locations.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Bus Operation o Drive a route in accordance with the Texas Education Agency and DPS regulations and provide the maximum safety for passengers for loading and unloading o Support all efforts to insure and improve school bus safety and be as familiar as possible with the bus and its equipment o Perform a thorough pre-trip and post-trip inspection before and after each route and field trip o Maintain the school bus in a safe operating condition through prescribed daily vehicle inspections; report mechanical defects and malfunctions to appropriate personnel o Prepare, maintain and submit, in a timely manner, various records and reports related to vehicle maintenance, miles driven, number of students transported and other related matters; prepare student conduct incident and accident reports o Maintain, read and follow route sheets including time changes and notify supervisor immediately of any changes o Maintain the school bus in clean condition, including interior windows, seats, dash area and floors
Standards of Conduct o Demonstrates behavior that is professional, ethical and responsible o Ability to communicate effectively in English, both written and orally, with school staff, students, parents, law enforcement and the monitoring public o Reports involvement in any accident, vehicle damage, and student injuries immediately; completesr equired reports o Attend all required in-service training, company required safety meetings and other required meetings o Provide and maintain updated copies of all CDL, CPR, and certification renewals
Occupant Safety & Management o Enforce bus rules as prescribed by the school district o Exercise student management through correct use of communication and discipline, report discipline problems to school officials o instruct students on safe riding rules and regulations o Knowledge in emergency procedures or contingency plans to be followed in the event of
an accident, unexpected school closing or unforeseen route change o Administers basic first aid when necessary
Perform other duties as assigned
MENTAL DEMANDS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS:
Must be able to walk, climb, sit, and communicate with others. Position requires pushing of wheelchairs, operating lifts, monitoring passengers, and repetitive motions. Conditions include operating in inclement weather, heat and cold (most buses are not air-conditioned), enduring a bumpy ride, and exposure to possible injury due to traffic accidents. There is exposure to dust, traffic fumes, and high noise level from both outside traffic as well as from passengers. Ability to move about the bus quickly and to safely exit rear of bus from 4’ elevation. Psychological factors can include dealing with mentally challenged children and adults, dealing with life threatening emergencies as well as coping with screaming children. Exerting 100 + pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater thann egligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Ability to lift or drag 25-40 pounds in an emergency. Team lift up to
150 pounds.
MINIMUM EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND CERTIFICATION:
High school diploma or GED preferred. Must be 21 years of age. Must have a Class A or B CDL with both “P”
(passenger) and “S” (school bus) endorsements. Must have an acceptable driving record in accordance with the standards developed jointly by the Texas Education Agency and Texas Department of Public Safety. Must have an annual physical examination completed on DPS forms. Must be able to complete a 20 hour certification course.
One year of experience in related field preferred. Must have interest in and empathy for children.
SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:
Must have the ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions in English Maintain knowledge of state rules for transporting students
Maintains effective control over groups of students Demonstrate problem-solving abilities Ability to walk 35 yards within 25 seconds
Ability to react quickly in emergency situations to solve problems
EVALUATION:
Performance of this position will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions for evaluating Support Services
Personnel as stated in the School Board Policies and Administrative Procedure.
Evaluations may be performed randomly by the Transportation Supervisor and also as the following situationsm ay arise:
Ninety (90) days after receiving a CDL.
When a driver signs up for Field Trips and it has been over a year since they last drove a 72 passenger vehicle.
After any accidents.
Evaluations may also include a Skills Revision test of five (5) skills.
