Microbiologist I

Location: Crete, IL
Job Type: Full-Time | Permanent
Pay: $20.00–$22.00 per hour

About the Role

We are seeking a Microbiologist I to join our laboratory team in Crete, Illinois. In this role, you'll perform microbiological testing on food and environmental samples while ensuring testing is completed accurately, efficiently, and in compliance with quality and safety standards.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone with laboratory experience who enjoys working in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.

What You'll Do

Perform microbiological testing using approved laboratory methods and SOPs.
Prepare samples by weighing, blending, pipetting, and plating.
Conduct rapid microbiological analyses and confirmation testing to identify bacterial organisms.
Record, calculate, and review laboratory data using our Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
Evaluate process control samples and investigate discrepancies.
Maintain accurate quality control and laboratory documentation.
Perform preventative maintenance and basic troubleshooting on laboratory equipment.
Assist with inventory management and laboratory organization.
Participate in cleaning schedules and sample retention procedures.
Support continuous improvement initiatives and root cause investigations.
Complete required training and follow all laboratory safety policies.
Support the laboratory quality management system and perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications Required

Associate degree in Microbiology, Biology, Food Science, Chemistry, or another related scientific field (or equivalent laboratory experience)
1–2 years of laboratory or microbiology experience
Basic understanding of microbiological testing procedures
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
Excellent attention to detail and documentation skills
Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative laboratory team

Preferred

Bachelor's degree in Microbiology, Biology, Food Science, Chemistry, or a related field
Experience working in a food testing, environmental, or commercial laboratory
Experience using a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)

Schedule Requirements

This position requires flexibility to work:

Evening shifts
Saturdays and Sundays
Additional hours as needed based on business demands

Physical Requirements

Stand for extended periods throughout the workday
Frequently lift up to 50 pounds
Perform repetitive laboratory procedures requiring manual dexterity
Distinguish subtle color variations during testing procedures
Work safely with laboratory chemicals, microbiological samples, and testing equipment while wearing appropriate PPE

Work Environment

This position is based in a temperature-controlled laboratory environment. Team members regularly work with laboratory equipment, microbiological samples, chemicals, and testing media while following strict quality and safety standards.

Compensation & Benefits

Pay: $20.00–$22.00 per hour
