Behind-the-Wheel Driving Instructor

Position Summary
Safe America Foundation is seeking a patient, dependable, and safety-focused Behind-the-Wheel Driving Instructor to provide practical driving instruction to teenage students.
The instructor will conduct one-on-one driving lessons in an approved driver-training vehicle. This position does not include classroom teaching. The instructor will help students develop the knowledge, confidence, judgment, and practical skills needed to operate a vehicle safely and responsibly.
Responsibilities
- Conduct behind-the-wheel driving lessons according to Safe America Foundation’s approved curriculum and training procedures.
- Teach students how to safely operate and control a vehicle.
- Adjust instruction to each student’s experience, confidence level, and learning needs.
- Clearly explain driving mistakes and provide calm, constructive feedback.
- Evaluate student performance and document progress after each lesson.
- Maintain accurate lesson schedules, attendance records, training logs, and student evaluations.
- Verify that students have the required permits and documentation before beginning a lesson.
- Inspect the training vehicle before and after lessons and report maintenance or safety concerns.
- Ensure students and passengers follow all seat belt and vehicle safety requirements.
- Maintain control of the training environment and intervene when necessary to prevent unsafe actions.
- Communicate professionally with students, parents, guardians, and program staff.
- Report accidents, traffic violations, student concerns, or unusual incidents immediately.
- Maintain student confidentiality and follow all organizational policies.
- Represent Safe America Foundation professionally in the community.
- Participate in required training, meetings, and instructor evaluations.
- Follow all applicable Georgia Department of Driver Services requirements and other state and local regulations.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED.
- Valid driver’s license in good standing.
- Safe driving history and an acceptable motor vehicle record.
- Ability to meet all applicable state requirements for behind-the-wheel driving instructors.
- Ability to pass a criminal background check, motor vehicle record check, and any other required screenings.
- Strong knowledge of traffic laws, defensive-driving practices, and vehicle safety.
- Ability to remain calm and respond appropriately during stressful or potentially dangerous driving situations.
- Strong verbal communication and instructional skills.
- Patience and the ability to work effectively with new, nervous, or inexperienced drivers.
- Dependable, punctual, and organized.
- Ability to maintain accurate student records and complete required documentation.
- Ability to work independently while following an established curriculum and organizational procedures.
- Professional conduct and appropriate boundaries when working with minors.
- Availability to work afternoons, evenings, weekends, or school-break periods as required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience as a driving instructor, driving coach, teacher, trainer, or youth mentor.
- Current or previous driving-instructor certification.
- Experience working with teenagers and young adults.
- Knowledge of Georgia driver-education requirements and licensing procedures.
- CPR and first-aid certification.
Physical and Working Requirements
- Ability to sit in a vehicle for extended periods.
- Ability to enter and exit a training vehicle repeatedly throughout the workday.
- Sufficient vision, hearing, mobility, and reaction time to supervise a student driver safely.
- Ability to operate instructor-side safety controls when the training vehicle is equipped with them.
- Ability to work in varying traffic, weather, and road conditions.
- Ability to maintain focus and situational awareness throughout each lesson.
