Full Job Description

MACHINE SHOP OPERATIONS MANAGER

We have an opening for a Machine Shop Operations Manager Supervisor. This position involves a balanced mix of desk time, job planning, meetings with machinists, teams and management regarding production, monitoring and mentoring machine shop staff, shop organization and leading shop individuals and teams in production and quality.

We are a well established, smaller sized, privately held Anaheim CA niche manufacturer of precision machined parts. The parts we produce are close tolerance and support the Aerospace and Defense industries sold to the major Aerospace Primes and the USG.

Position Summary

The Machine Shop Operations Manager is responsible for the overall performance of the machine shop and manufacturing operations. This position provides leadership for production personnel while ensuring equipment, tooling, facilities, materials, and operational systems are organized and functioning efficiently to support company objectives.

The Operations Manager serves as the primary leader of day-to-day manufacturing operations and is responsible for production performance, employee development, shop organization, equipment maintenance, facility management, safety, quality, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

Production & Personnel Leadership

Lead and supervise machinists, setup personnel, and production employees.
Schedule and assign work to meet customer delivery requirements.
Train, mentor, and develop shop personnel.
Monitor productivity, quality, attendance, and overall performance.
Promote a culture of accountability, teamwork, safety, and continuous improvement.
Participate in hiring, performance reviews, and disciplinary actions as required.

Operational Management

Plan, organize, and coordinate daily machine shop operations.
Monitor production schedules and capacity requirements.
Ensure materials, tooling, fixtures, programs, and resources are available for production.
Provide regular operational and production status updates to ownership and management.
Identify and eliminate bottlenecks affecting efficiency and delivery performance.

Tooling & Equipment Management

Maintain tooling inventories and tooling control systems.
Coordinate procurement of cutting tools, fixtures, gages, and shop supplies.
Ensure tooling and production resources are properly organized and maintained.
Assist with setup troubleshooting and process improvements.
Evaluate tooling and machining methods to improve efficiency and reduce costs.

Maintenance & Facility Management

Manage preventive maintenance programs for all manufacturing equipment.
Coordinate machine repairs and outside service providers.
Maintain facility organization, cleanliness, and operational readiness.
Oversee building maintenance, utilities, and shop infrastructure.
Recommend equipment upgrades and capital purchases.

Quality & Continuous Improvement

Support company quality objectives and customer requirements.
Lead lean manufacturing and workflow improvement initiatives.
Monitor operational metrics and implement corrective actions as needed.
Drive efforts to improve efficiency, reduce waste, and increase machine utilization.

Qualifications

10+ years of CNC machining experience with mills and/or lathes.
Previous machine shop supervisory or management experience.
Strong understanding of machining processes, tooling, setups, and production planning.
Ability to read machined parts engineering drawings and GD&T requirements.
Experience with equipment maintenance, facility operations, and tooling management.
Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
Computer proficiency with ERP systems, Microsoft Office, and production planning tools.

Preferred

Aerospace or defense manufacturing experience.
Lean manufacturing experience in a Machine Shop environment.
AS9100 or ISO quality system experience.
Experience managing both production personnel and operational systems.
Experience with Mastercam Programming, and tooling design.

Requirements

Effective communication skills, must speak English effectively.
High School Diploma or GED or Trade School Certificate
Must be able to inspect parts using mics, calipers, and other precision instruments.
Able to pass pre-employment screening, including standing, walking and lifting up to 40lbs.
Must be US Citizen or equivalent due to our US Govt ITAR requirements and contracts.
Basic computer skills required for using email, writing production planning or reports, scanning, etc...
