Description:

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.Maintain the sterile field throughout surgical procedures2.Scrub arms and hands according to established protocol3.Assist the surgical team with scrubbing in and putting on gloves and masks4.Pass surgical instruments to surgeons as needed during surgical procedures5.Hold retractors and complete additional tasks at surgeon’s request during procedures6.Handle tissue specimens obtained for laboratory analysis7.Count sponges, rags, needles, and instruments before, during, and after procedures8.Following surgeries, wash and sterilize all medical instruments and equipment9.Clean, organize and restock the operating room following surgical procedures10.Supply fluids for use during operations, including blood, glucose, plasma, and saline11.Prepare patients for surgical procedures12.Monitor patient’s’ vital signs throughout surgery13.Ensure proper operation of equipment such as lights and suction machines14.Offer technical assistance to the surgical team: surgeons, nurses, and anesthesiologists

1.Participates in organization Performance Improvement activities, department activities, and QAPI activities designed to maintain quality and safe care for patients served by the facility.2.Effectively communicates within the organization and with the community to provide qualityservices.3.Supports, assists and adheres to implementation of the organization mission and philosophy.4.Serves as a professional resource when needed, including assisting in co-worker training andorientation.5.Observes organization policies and procedures.6.Promotes a positive public image when representing the facility.7.Accountable to OR or Pre/Op PACU Team Leader.

1.Maintains confidentiality of patient related information and issues.

2.Demonstrates effective interpersonal skills.

3.Treats all patients, visitor and staff members fairly and with respect.

4.Demonstrates effective communication methods and skills, using lines of authority appropriately.

5.Demonstrates open communication to promote team work within department and inter-departmentally.

6.Maintains productive working relationship with healthcare team.

7.Able to perform care in non-judgmental manner, recognized discrepancies between patient and personal beliefs.

8.Performs other duties as assigned.

POLICY:

3.Demonstrates flexibility when changes in assignments are necessary.

4.Set priorities and assures the completion of all assigned duties within the shift.

5.Compliance with all attendance standards.

6.Remains flexible in staffing patterns and resolution of staffing conflicts; participates IN temporary assignments.

7.Follows HIPAA Guidelines at all times.

8.Attends all hospital required meetings and in-service education.

PROFESSIONAL GROWTH AND EDUCATION:

1.Participates in educational experiences designed to maintain competence.

2.Annually completes all required in-service and training (e.g. CPR, Infection Control, Safety, etc.,as appropriate to the job) as well as all educational requirements.

3.Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliation to keep abreast of the latest trends in the field of expertise.

4.Seeks feedback to enhance own performance.

Requirements:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
1.Completion of vocational certificate program in surgical technology2.Certification from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting3.Two years of experience in a similar position preferred4.Able to monitor yourself, others, and machines to ensure proper performance5.Consistent ability to coordinate tasks and actions with a team6.Excellent active listening and interpersonal communication skills7.Persistent arm-hand steadiness and manual dexterity
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Working environment is generally favorable; however, there is exposure to risk in the form of disease and potential for exposure to electrical and explosion hazards common in a surgical and/or Pre-Op and PACU environment. High potential for exposure to blood and body fluids; Personal protective equipment is required.
