Alisto Inc. is headquartered in Walnut Creek. For this position, the work occurs in various field locations. We are seeking experienced Standby Utility/Gas Inspectors in the Sacramento, CA and South Bay, CA areas.

While on-the-job training to obtain the required certifications for the covered tasks, you will be paid the training rate of $22.00 per hour, until you have completed all training requirements and begin performing covered tasks under union classification(s).
Union pay if assigned and approved by Client; IBEW Classification: Gas Utility Worker
Prevailing IBEW 1245 Rate & ILB: currently $74.61 per hour plus $25.43 per hour ILB and $50.00 Subsistence per day.
If you perform any covered union tasks, you will need to maintain and be responsible for your membership with the IBEW Local Union 1245.
Must have own vehicle in good working condition and with the required insurance, A minimum of 100K/300K/100K auto liability insurance is required and must be verified at the start of and during your employment, you will be reimbursed for all work-related and client-approved mileage at the current IRS rate.
Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities
- This role provides on-site standby inspection for third-party excavation and contractor activity near gas and electric utilities, protecting public safety and utility assets. The employee acts as utility owner’s field representative: verifying locates, monitoring excavation methods, documenting conditions, exercising stop-work authority when needed, and communicating with utility owner representatives and contractors.
- Typical schedule is Monday–Friday day shift with overtime and on-call as assigned; work occurs across PG&E’s service territory and may require travel.
- Position requires current OQ for assigned tasks, valid driver’s license, dependable attendance, professional conduct with the public/contractors, and compliance with all safety rules and PPE.
- Employee completes daily documentation (JSSA/tailboards, photos, standby forms, time entries) and maintains tool/equipment readiness (including locator checks and calibration logs).
In this role, you will be expected to:
- Provide continuous on-site standby during excavation near PG&E facilities; halt work for unsafe conditions.
- Verify USA markings and maps; request re-marking as needed and confirm safe exposure methods (hand/vac).
- Inspect exposed facilities; identify and report abnormal conditions and any damage immediately.
- Lead/participate in daily tailboards; enforce PPE and safe work practices at all times.
- Maintain complete daily records: ticket numbers, locations, photos, JSSA, standby forms, and timecards.
- Coordinate with PG&E supervisors, contractors, and public agencies to maintain safe, efficient work zones.
- Keep OQ, training, and equipment/locator calibrations current; carry required tools and communications.
- Support after-hours/emergency standby, travel as assigned and uphold customer service standards.
- Functions and duties may be supplemented or revised by Alisto, at its sole discretion or as directed by client(s).

Education, Certifications, and Work Experience Requirements
- Must have a minimum 3 years of underground experience.
- Minimum high school diploma or equivalent required, AA degree in technical or engineering subjects desired.
- Good written and verbal skills.
- Must complete the OSHA 10-hour General Industry Certification via Alisto’s OSHA training provider.
- Must be able to complete basic data entry and read and identify locations from provided maps.
- Must be familiar with basic Smart phone or tablet functionality and related applications.
- Valid driver’s license and clean driving record required.
- For this position, you will be required to use your own vehicle in good working condition and with the required insurance. A minimum of 100K/300K/100K auto liability insurance is required and must be verified at the start of and annually during your employment. In accordance with the terms and conditions of PG&E for standby, work use of personal vehicle will be reimbursed at the IRS standard mileage rate.
- Must take and pass a pre-employment drug test, physical and background check and is subject to all U.S. Department of Transportation Pipeline Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) Drug and Alcohol related regulations including participation in ongoing random drug testing.
- Must always follow and adhere to Alisto and Client’s safety plans and procedures.
Note: It is the responsibility of the applicant to obtain the required certification for Operator Qualification(s) and OSHA 10-hour General Industry Certification on their own time and expense. Alisto may, at its own discretion, pay for the training and evaluation fees for selected applicants to be Operator Qualified.
If assigned to client-required or union-covered tasks:
Must maintain membership with IBEW local 1245 for duration of employment or assignment to union work.

- OQ 05-01 Personnel performing locating to satisfy USA ticket requirements
- OQ 05-02 Standby Pipeline
- OQ 05-04 Personnel performing locating for maintenance (leak repair, inspection, etc.) OQ 03-05 Personnel performing pipe inspection/standby
- OQ 03-06 Pipe to Soil Reads
- OQ prerequisites apply (e.g. 05-02 depends on 05-01 or 05-04); if a prerequisite lapses, the dependent OQ suspends until requalified.
- OQ records must remain current and be available upon request.
Physical & Mental Requirements and Additional Skills
- Must be able to work outside under various weather conditions.
- Must be able to perform all of the following actions: regular use of hands and fingers to operate specialized equipment and tools; reaching overhead above the shoulders and horizontally; bending at the waist; standing and/or walking for extended periods of time; hearing and speaking to exchange information; carrying 3-5 lbs of electronic locating equipment for extended periods of time; occasionally lift 50 lbs with tool aid and frequently carry up to 30 lbs.
- Must be able to ascend/descend ladders, stairs, and ramps; must be able kneel, squat, and crawl to accomplish tasks in various environments including tight spaces
- Must be able to wear personal protective gear correctly, if required.
