Full Job Description

Position Title: Director of Transportation

Department: Transportation

Location: District Office

Reports to: Superintendent

FLSA Class: Exempt

Effective Date: July 1, 2026

SUMMARY

To enable each student, through safe and efficient transportation, to take full advantage of the complete range of curricular and extracurricular activities offered by the district’s schools.

DUTIES

Conform with all state laws and regulations regarding school transportation.
Maintain safety standards in conformance with state and insurance regulations and develop a program of preventive safety.
Recruit, train, and supervise all transportation personnel, and make recommendations on their employment, promotion, and release.
Performs annual evaluation for District bus drivers.
Advise Superintendent on road hazards for decision on school closing during inclement weather.
Act as a liaison with road commissioner for consultation on road hazards for decision on school closing during inclement weather.
Cooperate with school principals and others responsible for planning special school trips.
Develop and administers a transportation program to meet all the requirements of the daily instructional program and extracurricular activities.
Formulate specifications to be incorporated into contractual agreements.
Prepare bus routes and coordinates field trips.
Prepare and updates bus routes for all public and non-public schools in the district.
Attend appropriate committee, staff meetings, and board meetings as requested.
Help prepare and administer the transportation budget.
Authorize purchases in accordance with the budgetary limitations and district rules.
Approve and forwards transportation service invoices to the accounting department.
Maintain all district-owned equipment and develop plans for preventive maintenance.
Maintain and clean district office not more than two hours per week.
Complete suspicious driver certification training.
Oversee bus driver annual training and certification.
Prepare transportation payroll on a weekly basis.
Track all miles and pre-trip checks and keeps logs of them.
Complete and dispatches insurance reports.
Coordinate and keeps record of all bus leases.
Submit reports on vehicle accidents to insurance company.
Submit all reports required by state authorities and ISBE.
Keep online clearinghouse system updated with current driver list/
Manage and coordinate repairs for all district vehicles.
Take an active role in solving discipline problems occurring on school buses.
Act as liaison with parents for complaints and special requests.
Provide the purchasing department with contractor performance qualification data.
Review annually the advisability of a district-owned transportation system.
Develop recommendations for future equipment and personnel needs based on a survey of resident students, distances, and grade levels.
Develop recommendations for future transportation needs based on an annual survey of residents.
Assign drivers to designated buses.
Perform other duties as assigned by administration.

QUALIFICATIONS

Must complete Department of Transportation (DOT) Drug and Alcohol Supervisor Training.
Must be 21 years of age or older and have a high school diploma or equivalent.
Must possess or be able to obtain a CDL with school bus endorsement.
Possess a valid driver’s license, which has not been revoked, suspended, or canceled within the 3 years prior to the date of application.
Must be able to meet all requirements for a school bus driver permit in accordance with the Illinois Administrative Code Chapter 2 SEC. 1035.15.
Pass all State of Illinois written testing and behind-the-wheel examinations.
Pass the required annual physical examination drug test.
Ability to maintain good working relationships with fellow employees and students.
Demonstrate sound mental health.
Physically be able to bend, stoop, twist, turn, reach, carry, pull, push, and climb steps frequently and sit extensively.
Ability to lift up to 40 lbs.
Ability to push/pull up to 20 lbs.
Repetitive use of arms, hands, and shoulders especially on right side to operate door opener.
Repetitive use of legs and feet.
Ability to communicate to students, parents and staff in an acceptable/courteous manner.
Ability to understand and follow basic oral and written instructions.
Ability to operate a wheelchair lift.
Enforce school regulations and policies in a professional manner.
Ability to understand and follow basic oral and written instructions.
General knowledge of school buses and related equipment required.
Experience working with daily logs, inspection reports, and accident reports.
Abilities in interviewing, employing, and evaluating transportation personnel.

SCHEDULING

The normal working hours are 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. This schedule is subject to change with district demands.

Pay: $47,000.00 - $57,000.00 per year
