Classroom Assistant
The Elementary Classroom Assistant supports the Lead Elementary Guide in creating a safe, nurturing, organized, and engaging Montessori learning environment that fosters independence, curiosity, responsibility, and a lifelong love of learning. The Classroom Assistant works collaboratively with the teaching team to support students academically, socially, emotionally, and physically while maintaining the prepared environment in accordance with Montessori philosophy and Hudson Country Montessori School standards.
The Elementary Classroom Assistant serves as a positive role model, demonstrates professionalism at all times, and contributes to a respectful and collaborative school community.
Essential ResponsibilitiesStudent Support
- Support the Lead Guide in implementing the Montessori curriculum and daily classroom routines.
- Assist students individually, in small groups, and during whole-group activities under the direction of the Lead Guide.
- Encourage student independence while providing appropriate guidance and support.
- Foster respectful interactions and model Grace and Courtesy throughout the school day.
- Supervise students during classroom activities, recess, lunch, arrival, dismissal, field trips, and special events.
- Maintain active supervision and ensure the safety and well-being of all students.
- Assist with conflict resolution using positive guidance techniques consistent with Montessori philosophy.
Classroom Environment
- Assist in maintaining a beautiful, orderly, clean, and fully prepared Montessori environment.
- Prepare, organize, rotate, and maintain classroom materials.
- Ensure classroom materials are complete, attractive, and accessible.
- Support classroom organization, inventory, and care of Montessori materials.
- Assist with classroom displays, bulletin boards, and student work presentations.
Instructional Support
- Reinforce lessons presented by the Lead Guide.
- Support students in Practical Life, Sensorial, Language, Mathematics, Cultural Studies, Science, Geography, History, Art, and Music as directed.
- Encourage concentration, independence, and problem-solving.
- Support project-based learning, research, and collaborative learning experiences.
- Assist with classroom observations and documentation of student progress when requested.
School Community
- Build positive relationships with students, families, and colleagues.
- Demonstrate professionalism, confidentiality, and ethical conduct at all times.
- Participate in faculty meetings, professional development, school events, and community activities.
- Support school-wide initiatives, special programs, field trips, and summer programming as assigned.
- Maintain flexibility and willingness to assist throughout the school as needed.
General Responsibilities
- Arrive on time and prepared each day.

- Follow all Hudson Country Montessori School policies and procedures.
- Comply with Connecticut Office of Early Childhood licensing regulations, NAEYC standards, and all health and safety requirements.
- Complete all required trainings and certifications.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Director or Lead Guide.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent (Associate's or Bachelor's degree preferred).
- Experience working with elementary-aged children.
- Genuine enthusiasm for working with children.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Excellent organizational and time-management abilities.
- Ability to work collaboratively as part of a teaching team.
- Professionalism, reliability, flexibility, and initiative.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Physical ability to actively supervise children, move classroom materials, sit on the floor, bend, lift up to 40 pounds, and participate in outdoor activities.
- Commitment to Montessori philosophy and a child-centered approach to education.
- Current CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).

- Montessori education (AMS, AMI, or MACTE training or experience)
- Elementary classroom experience

Responsibilities
- Assist classroom teachers with lesson planning and implementing educational activities aligned with curriculum standards in subjects such as literacy, math, and early childhood education.
- Support students' individual learning needs, including those with disabilities or special education requirements, by providing tailored assistance and behavior management strategies.
- Help manage classroom routines, including transitions between activities, maintaining a positive behavior management approach to foster a safe and respectful environment.
- Engage children in age-appropriate play and educational activities that promote social-emotional development, communication skills, and cognitive growth.
- Supervise students during indoor and outdoor activities, ensuring safety and encouraging positive interactions among peers.
- Collaborate with teachers to monitor student progress, document observations, and assist in developing curriculum modifications or additional support plans.
- Maintain clear communication with staff and parents regarding student needs, progress, and classroom events to support a cohesive educational experience.
Experience
- Prior experience working with children in educational settings such as daycare centers, preschools, or elementary classrooms is highly preferred.
- Demonstrated knowledge of childhood development principles and early childhood education practices.
- Experience supporting literacy education, math instruction, and classroom management techniques.
- Familiarity with special education strategies and working with students who have disabilities or behavioral challenges.
- Technical proficiency with educational tools, classroom technology, and curriculum development software is advantageous.
- Proven ability to collaborate effectively with teachers, school staff, and families to support student success.
- Previous roles in private schools or daycare environments that emphasize preschool teaching or Montessori methods are a plus.
