Full Job Description

Position Summary

The Educational Sign Language Interpreter is a trained professional who facilitates communication between Deaf and Hard of Hearing students and others within an educational setting. This position is specifically assigned to support junior high school students, providing communication access to classroom instruction, academic discussions, peer interactions, school activities, and related services.

Using American Sign Language (ASL) and other appropriate communication methods, the interpreter ensures students have equitable access to learning opportunities and can fully participate in their educational environment. The Educational Sign Language Interpreter collaborates with teachers, special education staff, administrators, and service providers to support student success while maintaining professional interpreting standards and confidentiality.

Essential Responsibilities

Interpret spoken English into American Sign Language (ASL) and ASL into spoken English.
Provide communication access during classroom instruction, group discussions, assemblies, field trips, and school-sponsored activities.
Support junior high school students in accessing academic content, peer interactions, and extracurricular opportunities.
Facilitate effective communication between students, teachers, service providers, and school staff.
Maintain impartiality, professionalism, and confidentiality at all times.
Adapt interpreting methods to meet the student's communication and educational needs.
Collaborate with educational teams to support student success and inclusion.
Follow all federal, state, district, and professional standards of practice.
Participate in meetings, trainings, and professional development opportunities as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Required

Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL).
Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) Certificate with a score of 4.0 or higher (per client requirement).
State Board of Education Initial Sign Language Interpreter Certificate, if required.
Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Certification, as applicable per state regulations or client requirements.
Complies with all relevant professional standards of practice.
Current CPR certification, if applicable.
TB questionnaire, PPD, or chest X-ray, if applicable.
Current Health Certificate, if required by contract or state regulation.
Must meet all federal, state, and local employment requirements.
Must be at least 18 years of age.

Preferred Qualifications

Associate's Degree or Bachelor's Degree in Interpreting, Deaf Studies, Education, or a related field.
Previous experience providing ASL interpretation services in a K-12 educational setting.
Experience supporting middle school or junior high school students.
Knowledge of Deaf culture and the unique communication needs of Deaf and Hard of Hearing students.
Strong collaboration, organization, and communication skills.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Advanced proficiency in ASL and English.
Understanding of Deaf culture and Deaf awareness.
Ability to accurately interpret academic content across multiple subject areas.
Strong professional judgment and ethical decision-making skills.
Ability to build positive working relationships with students and school staff.
Commitment to fostering inclusion, accessibility, and student independence.
