City Machine & Welding, Inc., an established Amarillo manufacturing and repair company with more than a century of experience, is seeking a dependable and experienced Class A CDL Driver – Local / Yard Driver to join our team.
This position offers a predictable daytime schedule, primarily local driving responsibilities, and the opportunity to be home every night.
Our compressed work schedule is designed to provide employees with greater work-life balance while maintaining full-time weekly compensation.
Standard Work Schedule
- Monday–Thursday
- 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.
- One-hour unpaid lunch
- 32 hours actually worked
- 40 hours of pay
- Home every night
Under the standard schedule, employees work four 8-hour days, totaling 32 actual work hours, but receive compensation equivalent to 40 hours at their regular hourly rate.
Friday Rotation
Employees may be required to work approximately every third Friday, depending on workload and business needs.
When an employee works a full Friday shift:
- Monday–Thursday: 32 hours worked
- Friday: 8 additional hours worked
- Total actual hours worked: 40 hours
- Total compensation: 48 hours of pay
Employees do not lose the additional eight hours of compensation provided through the compressed-workweek benefit when they are required to work Friday.
Overtime eligibility begins when an employee actually works more than 40 hours during the applicable workweek, in accordance with applicable wage-and-hour laws and company policy.
HOME EVERY NIGHT
This is not an over-the-road driving position.
The primary responsibility of this position is moving and positioning trailers on company property. The driver will also periodically operate company vehicles on public roads for local deliveries, pickups, and other transportation needs.
Occasional same-day trips may be required within the surrounding Tri-State region, depending on business needs.
Trips are intended to be completed within the same day, allowing the employee to return home each night.
Position Summary
The Class A CDL Driver – Local / Yard Driver is responsible for safely moving, positioning and transporting company trailers, equipment, materials and related loads in support of City Machine & Welding's manufacturing and repair operations.
The majority of the position involves on-property trailer movement and yard operations, with periodic local road driving throughout the Amarillo area and occasional same-day regional trips.
The successful candidate must demonstrate safe driving practices, sound judgment, attention to detail, dependability, and the ability to perform assigned responsibilities independently with limited supervision.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Safely move and position trailers throughout company property.
- Spot trailers at designated loading, unloading, production and storage locations.
- Couple and uncouple tractors and trailers safely and efficiently.
- Perform routine trailer movements to support manufacturing, production, and shipping requirements.
- Transport trailers, materials, equipment or other loads on public roads as required.
- Make local pickups and deliveries throughout the Amarillo area.
- Complete occasional same-day regional trips within the Tri-State area when required.
- Conduct required pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections.
- Inspect tractors, trailers, and related equipment for visible safety or maintenance concerns.
- Report vehicle, trailer or equipment deficiencies promptly.
- Verify that loads are properly positioned and secured before transportation.
- Follow applicable load-securement requirements.
- Ensure shipping, receiving or transportation documentation is accurate when required.
- Safely back and maneuver tractor-trailer combinations in manufacturing, yard and customer environments.
- Maintain awareness of personnel, equipment and obstacles while operating within the facility.
- Maintain assigned vehicles and work areas in clean and orderly condition.
- Follow company safety procedures and applicable transportation requirements.
- Communicate effectively with production, shipping, receiving and supervisory personnel.
- Assist with other transportation, material-handling, or facility support duties when needed.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
Candidates should demonstrate:
- Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
- Ability to safely operate Class A commercial motor vehicles and tractor-trailer combinations.
- Experience maneuvering, backing, coupling, and positioning trailers.
- Ability to safely operate in confined yard and manufacturing environments.
- Ability to conduct required vehicle inspections.
- Knowledge of safe load handling and transportation practices.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Strong situational awareness and sound judgment.
- Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
- Consistent and dependable attendance.
- Strong work ethic and personal accountability.
- Ability to communicate effectively with coworkers, customers, and supervisors.

- Ability to reliably commute to the Amarillo facility.
Applicants must meet applicable company, licensing, insurance, and regulatory requirements associated with operating commercial motor vehicles.
Preferred Experience
Previous experience in one or more of the following areas is preferred:
- Local Class A CDL driving
- Yard or hostler driving
- Trailer spotting
- Manufacturing or industrial transportation
- Flatbed or equipment transportation
- Local pickup and delivery
- Commercial trailer maneuvering
- Material or equipment transportation
- Manufacturing or repair facility operations
Experience in an industrial or manufacturing environment is beneficial but is not required for an otherwise qualified CDL driver.

Work Environment
This position operates in and around an active manufacturing and repair facility and includes both indoor and outdoor work.
Employees should be comfortable working around:

- Forklifts and other industrial vehicles
