The Friends of the Sutro Tunnel Charity is transforming one of Nevada's most significant historic landmarks into a vibrant living history destination where visitors can experience the story of the Comstock through preservation, education, recreation, and community engagement.
We are seeking an enthusiastic, organized, and service-oriented Site & Volunteer Coordinator to deliver exceptional visitor experiences while supporting volunteers, educational programming, and day-to-day site operations.

About Friends of the Sutro Tunnel Charity
The Friends of the Sutro Tunnel Charity is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and interpreting the historic Sutro Tunnel and surrounding historic site near Dayton, Nevada.
Supported through the Travel Nevada Destination Development (3D) Grant, the organization is developing the site into a regional heritage tourism destination featuring:
· Historic preservation
· Guided and self-guided tours
· Living history programming
· Educational experiences
· Community events
· Outdoor recreation
· Volunteer stewardship
Our work connects visitors to Nevada's rich mining history while supporting heritage tourism and community revitalization.
Position Summary
The Site & Volunteer Coordinator serves as the primary on-site ambassador for the Friends of the Sutro Tunnel Charity.
Working closely with the Board Liaison and the Tourism Director, this position helps prepare the site for visitors, coordinates volunteers, supports events and educational programming, and helps create safe, engaging, and memorable visitor experiences.
This is a hands-on position that combines customer service, volunteer engagement, event support, and site operations.
Primary Responsibilities
Site & Site Operations (35%)
· Welcome visitors and provide outstanding customer service
· Prepare the site for tours, programs, and public visitation
· Assist with guided and self-guided visitor experiences
· Conduct opening and closing procedures
· Perform routine site safety inspections
· Maintain visitor amenities and interpretive materials
· Monitor site appearance and visitor readiness
Volunteer Program Coordination (25%)
· Recruit, schedule, and coordinate volunteers using established procedures
· Conduct volunteer orientation and training using existing program materials
· Coordinate docent assignments and event volunteers
· Track volunteer hours and maintain volunteer records
· Foster a positive, engaging volunteer culture through communication and recognition
Events & Educational Programming (20%)
· Coordinate logistics for public events and educational programs
· Prepare event spaces and visitor areas
· Support instructors, presenters, and partner organizations
· Coordinate volunteer assignments during programs
· Assist with setup, operations, and breakdown of events
Visitor Services & Data Collection (10%)
· Welcome and orient visitors
· Track visitation and program attendance
· Administer visitor surveys and feedback tools
· Assist with ticketing or reservation systems
· Maintain visitor and participation records to support grant reporting
Administrative & Organizational Support (10%)
· Respond to visitor inquiries
· Maintain volunteer and event records
· Assist with scheduling and calendars
· Support communications and outreach as directed
· Perform additional duties that support successful site operations
Qualifications
The ideal candidate is friendly, dependable, organized, and enjoys working with people in a historic outdoor setting.
Preferred qualifications include:
· Experience in hospitality, museums, parks, recreation, education, nonprofit organizations, or volunteer coordination
· Strong customer service and communication skills
· Excellent organizational abilities and attention to detail
· Ability to work independently and collaboratively
· Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions
· Basic computer proficiency (Microsoft Office and Google Workspace)
· Valid driver's license and reliable transportation
· Availability to work weekends, occasional evenings, and special events
A passion for Nevada history, historic preservation, or heritage tourism is highly desirable.

· Coordinate a reliable and engaged volunteer program using established procedures

· Maintain accurate visitor and volunteer records that support organizational planning and grant reporting
· Contribute to a safe, organized, and visitor-ready historic site
· Work collaboratively with staff, volunteers, and community partners to advance the organization's mission

Site & Event Coordinator Full-Time Seasonal Position (40 hours/week)
