The Critical Care Nurse (CCN) Training Program is a structured professional development program designed for registered nurses who are interested in transitioning into a critical care nursing role. The program combines classroom instruction, online learning, clinical simulation, and hands-on preceptorship to prepare nurses to safely and independently care for critically ill patients.
The program offers two specialty pathways:

Intensive Care Unit (ICU): Includes 10 weeks of clinical preceptorship.

Progressive Care Unit (PCU): Includes 6 weeks of clinical preceptorship.
Throughout the program, participants gain experience through both observation and direct patient care while completing a comprehensive learning curriculum.

Structured blended learning experience.

Computer-based education modules.

Instructor-led classroom training.

Clinical simulation experiences.
-
Campus-based clinical preceptorship.

Specialized training in either the ICU or PCU pathway.

Mentorship and support to develop into a safe, independent critical care nurse.
Participants are expected to:

Successfully complete an ECG proficiency exam within the first two weeks of orientation.

Obtain Advanced Life Support (ALS) certification for applicable critical care units during orientation.

Complete all required online modules, classroom instruction, and simulation experiences.
-
Fulfill all program requirements as part of the employment agreement.
-
Travel to designated training locations may be required.
-
CCN cohorts are offered five times annually (January, March, May, July, September, and November), with acceptance deadlines and start dates established for each cohort.
The program is intended for registered nurses who are passionate about pursuing a career in critical care and are committed to structured learning, clinical growth, and successfully completing all training requirements.
Conduct comprehensive assessments to evaluate the physiological, psychological, developmental, sociocultural, spiritual, and lifestyle factors of patients.
Develop and implement individualized care plans based on patient needs and standards of care, regularly evaluating and revising these plans as necessary.
Administer medications and treatments accurately and safely, following physician orders and hospital protocols, and monitor for adverse reactions.
Educate patients and families about health conditions, treatments, medications, and self-care strategies to promote understanding and compliance.
Collaborate with medical staff and ancillary departments to coordinate and optimize patient care, ensuring effective communication and teamwork.
Maintain accurate and timely documentation of patient information, care activities, interventions, and outcomes in the medical record.
Evaluate the effectiveness of care plans and interventions continuously, making necessary adjustments to improve patient health and achieve positive outcomes.
Ensure compliance with infection control protocols, safety standards, and regulatory requirements to maintain a safe healthcare environment.
Provide emotional support and therapeutic communication to patients and their families, addressing their emotional and psychological needs.
Supervise and delegate care provided by members of the healthcare team to ensure quality and efficiency.
Engage in continuous professional development and participate in performance improvement activities to enhance patient care and operational efficiency.
Respond to code situations promptly and effectively, providing necessary interventions to stabilize patients.
