Position Overview:
The Senior Electrical Engineer will be a senior member of the engineering team, playing a critical role in the electrical architecture and design of our entire product ecosystem. The primary focus will be on developing sophisticated electrical systems for our new automated drone docking station and the critical power/data interface between the dock and the drone. This role will also contribute significantly to the ongoing electrical engineering efforts for the drone itself. The ideal candidate is a seasoned engineer with deep expertise in power electronics, PCB design, and systems integration, capable of leading complex technical challenges from concept to production.
Key Responsibilities:
Drone Dock & Interface Design:
- Lead the electrical design and development of the automated drone docking system, including high-power battery charging systems, power distribution networks, and control electronics.
- Architect the drone-to-dock interface, designing a robust and reliable connection for high-speed data and high-power transfer.
- Select and validate connectors, components, and protection circuitry suitable for long-term, all-weather outdoor deployment.
UAS Electrical Systems Design:
- Design and develop complex, high-reliability printed circuit boards (PCBs) for various UAS subsystems, including power management boards, payload interfaces, and avionics.
- Create and manage schematics, layouts, and bills of materials using EDA tools (e.g., Altium Designer).
- Design and document complex wire harnesses and electrical system integrations for the aircraft.
System Integration, Testing & Validation:
- Develop and execute comprehensive test plans to validate electrical systems at the component, subsystem, and system levels.
- Lead the troubleshooting of complex electrical issues, using standard test equipment like oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and spectrum analyzers.
- Ensure designs meet rigorous standards for reliability, safety, and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC/EMI).
Technical Leadership & Collaboration:
- Serve as a subject matter expert in electrical engineering, providing technical guidance and mentorship to other engineers.
- Lead electrical design reviews and contribute to key architectural decisions.
- Collaborate closely with mechanical, software, systems, and test teams to deliver a highly integrated and reliable product.
- Interface with component suppliers and manufacturing partners to ensure quality and manufacturability.
Qualifications & Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related technical discipline. A Master’s degree is strongly preferred.
- 5-8+ years of professional experience in electrical engineering, with a proven track record of designing and launching complex hardware products.
- Expert-level proficiency in PCB design and layout using EDA tools like Altium Designer or similar.
- Strong experience in power electronics design, including DC/DC converters, battery management systems (BMS), and high-power charging circuits for Lithium-ion/LiPo batteries.
- Demonstrated experience in designing for and testing against EMI/EMC standards.
- Experience with mixed-signal design, microcontrollers, and standard communication protocols (e.g., CAN, Ethernet, I2C, SPI, UART).
- Familiarity with designing ruggedized electronics for harsh environments.
- Experience with robotics, UAS, or automated ground support equipment is a significant plus.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- Experience leading projects or mentoring other engineers.
