Full Job Description

POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT

POSITION TITLE: GENETICS COUNSELOR ASSISTANT

TYPE: NONEXEMPT

EMPLOYMENT STATUS: FULL-TIME

SALARY: COMMENSURATE WITH EXPERIENECE

DATE REQUESTED: JUNE 11, 2026

AVAILABLE: IMMEDIATE

Position Purpose:

Involved with the day to day workings of a busy genetics and metabolic clinic while interacting with expert genetics professionals. This clinic is integrally involved in the training of genetic counseling students as well as medical students, residents, and fellows. The Genetic Counselor Assistant will work directly with genetic counselors, geneticists, and other staff, while gaining valuable experience in the field of genetics.

Qualifications:

High School diploma or GED required. Interest in patient care and is motivated to learn. Knowledge and proficiency in word processing and file management using Microsoft Office and other software as required by the department. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail are required. Flexibility in response to needs of clinic logistics. Ability to work independently in a fast-paced interdisciplinary environment. Ability to communicate openly and clearly.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties:

1. Prepare for patient visits including, contacting referring physicians, obtaining patient records, entering patients in clinic database.

2. Post clinic duties such as assisting with test requisition forms, prior authorization requests, tracking test results, and with pre-post clinic conferences.

3. Clinic duties include accompanying patients to the laboratory, facilitate sample collection, assisting in referrals to other specialties, and obtaining patient signatures.

4. Administrative duties include preparing and distributing patient charts for clinic and maintaining logs of pending genetic testing results.

5. Attend weekly pre-post clinic conferences.

Working Conditions:

1. Occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds with or without assistance.

2. Able to complete duties under stress, deadlines, and while attending to multiple duties simultaneously.

3. Prolonged computer related exposure, as well as sitting and standing at workstations for long periods of time.

4. Noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

5. Bending, sitting, and standing frequently throughout the day.

6. Occasionally travel off-site for meetings, conferences, seminars, and training.
