Full Job Description

Seeking a hardworking, dependable Fiber Construction Technician to join our field operations team. This is a hands-on, outdoor position involving physical labor, underground and aerial utility construction, fiber installation and operation of construction equipment in all weather conditions throughout the year.

This is not an office or desk-based IT position. Candidates should be comfortable working outdoors daily, performing physically demanding work, operating equipment, and traveling to job sites as needed.

Experience in underground utility construction, boring, excavation, aerial utility work, locating, or telecommunications construction is strongly preferred.

Essential Job Functions

Perform installation, troubleshooting, repair and maintenance of fiber optic systems and related infrastructure.
Install underground and aerial fiber optic cable in residential, commercial, and municipal environments.
Operate and assist with heavy equipment used in utility construction, including boring, excavating, trenching, and restoration operations.
Perform physical outdoor labor in varying weather conditions inclduing heat, cold, rain, snow and mud.
Assist with ground restoration activities including grading, seeding, and cleanup following construction work.
Locate underground utilities and safely work around existing utility infrastructure.
Perform aerial utility work and safely operate aerial lift equipment when required.
Install, splice, terminate, and test fiber optic cabling using appropraite test equipment and OTDRs.
Construct splice cases and maintain accurate records, diagrams, and schematics related to fiber installations.
Plan and complete installations for new services and customer equipment including network interface devices, wiring, and wireless gateway routers.
Trobuleshoot service interruptions and determine necessary repairs using testing and detection equipment.
Read and interpret schematics, blueprints, and utility maps.
Complete and maintain accurate work orders, installation records, and customer documentation.
Clean, maintain, and organize company vehicles, tools and equipment.
Provide professional customer service and educate costomers on products and services.
Follow all company safety procedures and industry safety standards.
Perform other duties as assigned by management.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of underground and aerial utility construction practices preferred.
Knowledge of boring, excavation, trenching, and ground restoration preferred.
Knowledge of locating underground utilities preferred.
Ability to safely operate or learn to operate heavy equipment and aerial lift equipment.
Ability to work outdoors year-round in physically demanding conditions.
Ability to lift, carry, climb, kneel, and perform manual labor throughout the workday.
Knowledge of fiber optic splicing, termination, testing, and troubleshooting techniques.
Knowledge of electronics, electrical wiring theory, and telecommunications systems.
Ability to read schematics, blueprints, and wiring diagrams.
Experience using hand tools, power tools, and fiber testing equipment.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Strong problem-solving and organizational skills.
Ability to communicate effectively with coworkers and customers.
Ability to differentiate between colors and sizes of wires and cables.

Education and Experience

High School Diploma or equivalent required.
Two to five years of experience in telecommunications, utility construction, fiber installation, excavation, directional boring, locating, or related field preferred.
Experience with aerial utility construction or underground utility installation highly preferred.
Fiber splicing, copper/fiber certifications, locator certifications, or access equipment certifications are a plus.
Experience with routers, switches, wireless networking, and IP addressing is beneficial.
Valid Ohio driver’s license (or ability to obtain one) with acceptable driving record required.
