The Role
The Illinois Association of School Business Officials (Illinois ASBO) seeks a motivated and versatile marketing and communications professional to join our team. This role is based in our DeKalb office with an option for hybrid work (two days per week).
The Content Strategist is a marketing generalist and content lead responsible for executing integrated communications across email, social media, web, and publications while supporting strategic planning and campaign development. This individual will play a central role in advancing Illinois ASBO’s communications and marketing initiatives, ensuring consistency of voice, accuracy of messaging, and effective outreach to our member communities.
This is a hands-on, high-ownership role. The ideal candidate writes with clarity and purpose, manages multiple projects with confidence, and thrives in a collaborative team environment where initiative is valued.
Communication Responsibilities
- Lead content development and editorial coordination for the Update magazine, including author recruitment, proof process management, and editorial calendar ownership.
- Own and maintain the editorial and communications calendar, coordinating timing and content across departments to ensure consistent, planned outreach.
- Draft and create emails and other Association communications from existing design templates.
- Own social media content development and scheduling, working in coordination with the Director’s strategy and the design team’s visual assets.
- Conduct research and analyze marketing campaigns and website content for effectiveness.
- Collaborate with members and the marketing team to develop program testimonials and article content.
- Coordinate and manage Advocacy communications.
- Assist in the creation of personas, groups, and lists for targeted marketing.

- Work cross-functionally to successfully complete projects from concept to delivery — on strategy, on time, and meeting pre-defined goals.
- Develop and implement promotional campaigns by identifying target segments, crafting audience-specific messaging, and ensuring alignment with Illinois ASBO’s brand voice and member value proposition.
- Support the Director in developing strategic marketing plans and campaign frameworks tied to organizational priorities.
- Ensure alignment with Illinois ASBO’s brand standards and style across all content and communications.
- Maintain strong time and project management practices to organize, prioritize, and complete multiple tasks with strict diligence and minimal supervision.

Qualifications
- Strong copywriting, editing, proofreading, and communication skills with demonstrated hands-on experience.
- Ability to write in a variety of voices and for diverse audiences.
- Skilled at developing member-centric messages and content.
- Willingness to learn new marketing, communications, and online community software. Experience with Higher Logic platforms (Informz, Thrive) is preferred.
- Ability to develop promotional plans, support marketing strategies, and solve complex problems creatively.
- Exceptional organizational and project management skills, with the ability to manage tight deadlines, competing priorities, and time-sensitive demands.
- Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills; capable of leading or contributing to work teams to advance projects.
Experience
- A minimum of two to three years of experience in marketing, communications, or a related field, with demonstrated writing and editorial experience.
- A college degree in marketing, communications, journalism, or a related field.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Experience with Zoom, Higher Logic Marketing software (Informz email software, Thrive communities), database management, website management, social media management, and calendar programs is a plus.
Additional Information
This position will provide one week of onsite support at the Association’s Annual Conference each April or May. Other travel in Illinois will be required throughout the year and is reimbursed by the Association.

Pay: Up to $75,000.00 per year
