Education/Experience Required:
High School diploma
Current Certification as a Central Service Technologist/Surgical Technician
3 to 4 years of Sterile Processing experience
3 years of lead/coordinator experience

Provides leadership and oversight of daily Sterile Processing Department (SPD) operations

Coordinates daily staffing and schedules to ensure appropriate coverage based on surgical volume and department needs, including PTO approvals

Assigns team members to work areas based on competency, workload, and operational priorities

Maintains workflow to ensure timely instrument processing, case cart assembly, and OR support

Monitors staff productivity, accuracy, and timeliness to meet departmental expectations

Facilitates daily huddles and departmental meetings; prepares agendas and communicates updates to staff and leadership

Supports quality, patient safety, and regulatory compliance

Ensures adherence to infection prevention, sterilization, and safety standards related to equipment, instruments, and the work environment

Promotes a culture of safety by identifying, reporting, and addressing issues through established channels

Participates in patient safety and quality improvement initiatives

Leads or supports performance improvement efforts, including data collection, trend analysis, and implementation of action plans

Collaborates with OR leadership, physicians, and interdisciplinary teams to improve processes and patient outcomes
Coordinates departmental workflow and interdepartmental communication

Maintains efficient department flow, including staff assignments, breaks, and coverage for absences

Monitors and assists with OR turnover activities and instrument availability

Ensures effective communication with OR staff and other departments to support patient care needs

Partners with SPD leadership/educator to manage inventory, equipment, and case cart readiness
Manages human resources activities for assigned staff

Participates in recruitment, interviewing, and hiring decisions

Provides coaching, performance feedback, and ongoing staff development

Conducts performance evaluations and competency assessments in collaboration with SPD leadership

Addresses employee relations concerns, including corrective action, in partnership with the SPD Manager

Maintains accurate employee records and supports professional development planning
Supports strategic and operational planning

Collaborates with SPD leadership in developing and implementing departmental policies and procedures

Participates in budget planning and management of departmental resources

Contributes to achieving operational goals aligned with Advocate Health and hospital objectives

Supports the principles of Shared Governance and organizational initiatives

Exposure to blood, body fluids, and hazardous materials

Ability to respond quickly and effectively in emergency situations

Requires physical strength and dexterity to handle instruments and equipment

Ability to lift up to 40–50 pounds

Flexibility to work varied hours based on department needs

Completion of required health screenings (e.g., TB testing, immunizations)
