Position Summary
Reporting directly to the President, the Controller serves as the senior financial leader of the company and is responsible for all accounting and financial operations. This role oversees financial reporting, cash flow management, construction accounting, project financial performance, payroll processing, banking relationships, and internal controls.
The ideal candidate is a construction accounting professional who enjoys balancing strategic financial leadership with day-to-day operational involvement. The Controller will work closely with project managers and company leadership to provide financial insight, maintain accurate project reporting, and support informed business decisions that drive profitability and growth.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Leadership & Reporting
- Lead and manage all accounting functions including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and cash management.
- Prepare timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
- Manage the monthly and year-end close process.
- Develop, maintain, and enforce accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls.
- Coordinate annual financial reviews, tax reporting, and year-end activities with external CPA firms.
- Serve as a trusted financial advisor to the President by providing financial analysis, forecasting, and operational insights to support strategic decision-making.
Construction Accounting & Project Financial Oversight
- Manage percentage-of-completion accounting and revenue recognition in accordance with industry standards.
- Prepare and maintain Work-in-Progress (WIP) schedules and project profitability reporting.
- Monitor project costs, committed costs, change orders, contract values, and billing status.
- Review project financial performance and partner with Project Managers to identify risks, opportunities, and corrective actions.
- Maintain accurate job cost records and project accounting data.
- Oversee owner billings, subcontractor billings, retainage tracking, and collections.
- Ensure proper setup of projects, schedules of values, commitments, and contract documentation within Sage 300 CRE (Timberline), Microsoft Excel, and related systems.
Cash Flow & Treasury Management
- Prepare weekly cash position reports and monthly cash flow forecasts.
- Manage banking relationships and daily treasury activities.
- Oversee bank reconciliations and cash management processes.
- Assist leadership with financial planning, budgeting, and forecasting activities.
Payroll, Compliance & Risk Management
- Process and oversee company payroll activities.
- Ensure timely filing of payroll taxes, sales and use taxes, gross receipts taxes, and other regulatory requirements.
- Manage annual 1099 reporting.
- Oversee subcontractor compliance requirements including lien waivers, insurance certificates, certified payroll documentation, and contract compliance.
- Support banking, insurance, and audit requirements.
- Coordinate with legal counsel and company leadership regarding contractual and financial risk matters.
Project Accounting Administration
- Oversee and support owner and subcontractor billing processes, including AIA billing requirements.
- Manage project accounting activities within Sage 300 CRE (Timberline) and Textura.
- Review and process change orders, commitments, subcontract agreements, and project cost transactions.
- Ensure accurate reporting and maintenance of project financial records.
- Work closely with Project Managers to maintain accurate forecasting and project financial visibility.
Leadership & Process Improvement
- Supervise and support accounting department staff.
- Establish priorities and ensure timely completion of accounting responsibilities.
- Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, reporting capabilities, and operational efficiency.
- Promote collaboration between accounting, operations, and project management teams.
- Foster a culture of accountability, accuracy, and continuous improvement.
Qualifications
- Strong knowledge of construction accounting, job costing, percentage-of-completion accounting, and revenue recognition.
- Demonstrated experience managing accounting and financial operations within the commercial construction industry.
- Experience preparing and analyzing Work-in-Progress (WIP) schedules.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively with project managers, subcontractors, external partners, and executive leadership.
- High level of integrity, professionalism, and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Education & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required.
- Minimum of 7 years of progressive accounting experience, with significant experience in commercial construction accounting.
- Prior Controller, Assistant Controller, Construction Accounting Manager, or similar leadership experience preferred.
- Experience with Sage 300 CRE (Timberline) strongly preferred.
- Experience with Textura or similar construction billing platforms preferred.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills required.
- Experience supporting bonding, banking relationships, and external audits preferred.

Pay: $85,000.00 - $125,000.00 per year
