Full Job Description

Founded in 1910 on the principles of making a difference through civic service, Scouting provides quality youth programs that build good character and leadership skills while building better communities. Our council, Scouting Colorado of Scouting America, was established in 1913 and settled into its current location in Lakewood, Colorado, in 2009. Through the years the mission has remained the same, to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law. As our community continues to grow and diversify, we remain committed to growing all youth into future leaders.

Position Summary:

The Senior Accountant plays a critical role in supporting the financial integrity and mission of Scouting Colorado. The Senior Accountant acts as a technical resource and mentor to Accounting Assistants, helping to promote best practices, professional development, and operational excellence. This role works closely with the Accounting Manager and organizational leadership to ensure effective financial stewardship of resources supporting youth development programs.

Position Description:

This role performs advanced accounting activities, ensures compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), nonprofit accounting standards, grant and donor restrictions, and assists with financial reporting, budgeting, audits, and internal controls. This position is responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, overseeing fund and grant accounting activities, supporting payroll, accounts payable, and accounts receivable operations, and providing financial analysis and research to support organizational decision-making.

Key Responsibilities:

Financial Reporting and Analysis

· Prepare and review monthly journal entries, account reconciliations, and adjusting entries.

· Maintain the general ledger and ensure accuracy and completeness of financial records.

· Perform month-end and year-end close processes.

· Prepare monthly and annual financial statements and management reports for leadership and governing boards.

· Analyze budget to actual financial results and investigate variances.

· Assist in the preparation for the annual audit and Form 990.

· Support the Accounting Manager with ad hoc reporting and research requests, annual budget development and tracking, forecasting, cash flow, and long-range financial planning.

· Identify trends, risks, and opportunities and recommend corrective actions when appropriate.

Fund Accounting and Grant Management

· Track and report restricted and unrestricted funds.

· Track donor-restricted gifts and support grant tracking, compliance, and financial reporting requirements.

· Maintain reconciliation of Permanently and Temporarily Restricted Net Assets.

Program, Camp, and Event Accounting

· Monitor financial activity related to camps, programs, fundraising events, and scouting activities.

· Prepare financial analyses for camping operations, membership initiatives, and special events.

· Ensure proper allocation of program expenses among departments and activities and assist staff in developing budgets for camp, activities, departments, and events.

Payroll, Accounts Payable, and Accounts Receivable Oversight

· Review payroll runs, accounts payable processing, and accounts receivable activities to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance with established procedures.

· Research and determine appropriate treatment of complex payroll, benefits, and accounting issues.

· Ensure strong internal controls surrounding cash receipts, disbursements, corporate cards, expense reports, and payroll processing.

Leadership and Collaboration

· Mentor junior accounting staff, provide technical guidance, and assist in training staff on financial concepts, policies, and procedures.

· Serve as financial resource for program directors, camp leadership, development staff, and volunteers.

· Serve as backup to other accounting functions as needed.

Qualifications

Education

· Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.

· CPA or CPA candidate preferred.

Experience

· Minimum of 4-5 years of progressive accounting experience.

· Nonprofit accounting experience highly preferred.

· Experience with fund accounting, grants management, donor restrictions, and financial reporting.

· Experience supporting annual audits and Form 990 preparation.

· Demonstrated experience with payroll, accounts payable, and accounts receivable operations.

· Experience providing technical leadership, mentoring, training, or guidance to accounting staff.

· Experience in public accounting or internal audit preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

· Strong understanding of GAAP and nonprofit accounting principles, including donor-restricted funds, grant compliance, and unrelated business income concepts.

· Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including pivot tables, lookup functions, data analysis, and complex reconciliations.

· Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Suite and proficiency with Microsoft 365 applications.

· Excellent attention to detail, analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

· Strong written and verbal communication abilities, including explaining financial information to non-financial stakeholders.

· Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, exercise sound judgment, and consistently meet deadlines.

· Excellent relationship-building and “soft” skills.

· Demonstrated professionalism, reliability, integrity, and ability to gain the trust and confidence of staff, management, volunteers, board members and trustees.

· Demonstrated history of discretion and understanding of the importance of maintaining confidentiality.

· Commitment to the mission and values of Scouting.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

To perform the essential functions of this position, the employee may be required to occasionally stand, walk, reach, and use hands and fingers for handling or operating office equipment. The role also requires the ability to communicate effectively and perceive information through sight and hearing. Must be able to lift and/or carry up to 30 lbs. Work location is primarily in-office with potential for hybrid opportunities. Occasional nights and weekends may be required in busier seasons, and pre-planned attendance at organizational events or meetings may be required.
