Full Job Description

Position Summary

The Buyer supports the Supply Chain and Procurement teams by ensuring the timely purchase and delivery of raw materials, ingredients, packaging, finished goods, and indirect supplies required to meet production schedules and business needs.

This position is an excellent opportunity for an individual looking to develop a career in procurement and supply chain within a fast-paced food manufacturing environment. The Junior Buyer will work closely with suppliers and cross-functional teams to maintain material availability, resolve purchasing issues, and support efficient inventory management.

Key Responsibilities

Review Material Requirements Planning (MRP) reports daily and generate purchase orders based on production and inventory requirements.
Purchase raw materials, ingredients, packaging materials, finished goods, and indirect supplies, including operating, sanitation, and office materials.
Monitor inventory levels and coordinate replenishment to maintain appropriate stock levels while minimizing excess and obsolete inventory.
Track open purchase orders and communicate with suppliers to ensure timely and accurate deliveries.
Expedite purchase orders and resolve delivery delays, shortages, or other supply issues to minimize production disruptions.
Coordinate material transfers between third-party warehouses and the manufacturing facility.
Review production forecasts and assist with planning long-lead-time purchases, blanket orders, and recurring material requirements.
Obtain supplier quotations, compare pricing and specifications, and assist with sourcing and evaluating new vendors.
Maintain accurate supplier records, purchase order files, pricing information, lead times, and procurement documentation.
Verify purchase order accuracy and resolve discrepancies involving shipments, receipts, invoices, pricing, quantities, and specifications.
Build and maintain positive supplier relationships while supporting vendor performance evaluations related to quality, delivery, responsiveness, and service.
Identify cost-saving opportunities and communicate changes in market conditions, pricing, minimum order quantities, and lead times.
Work closely with Production Planning, Warehouse, Customer Service, Quality Assurance, Finance, and other departments to ensure material availability and resolve supply issues.
Maintain purchasing reports, procurement metrics, supplier information, and inventory data.
Enter, update, and maintain accurate purchasing information within the ERP/MRP system.
Ensure purchasing activities comply with company procurement policies, food safety requirements, HACCP principles, and applicable regulations.
Provide administrative and operational support to the Procurement team as needed.
Serve as backup support for inventory cycle counting and related inventory control activities.
Participate in continuous improvement initiatives focused on purchasing, inventory management, supplier performance, and supply chain efficiency.
Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

QualificationsEducation

Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management, Business Administration, Operations Management, Food Science, or a related field preferred.
Professional coursework or certification in Purchasing, Procurement, or Supply Chain Management is considered an asset.

Experience

1–3 years of experience in purchasing, procurement, inventory control, materials management, or supply chain preferred.
Experience in food manufacturing, consumer packaged goods (CPG), or a manufacturing environment is considered an asset.
Experience working with ERP/MRP systems is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Understanding of purchasing, procurement, inventory management, and supply chain principles.
Familiarity with MRP/ERP systems and purchasing processes.
Strong Microsoft Office skills, particularly Microsoft Excel.
Basic understanding of food manufacturing, HACCP principles, and food safety requirements.
Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks and deadlines.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Strong analytical, critical-thinking, and problem-solving abilities.
High attention to detail and accuracy.
Ability to build and maintain positive working relationships with suppliers and internal stakeholders.
Basic negotiation skills with a willingness to develop supplier management and sourcing expertise.
Ability to work independently while contributing effectively within a collaborative team environment.
Process-oriented mindset with a commitment to continuous improvement.
Ability to learn new systems, processes, and purchasing requirements quickly.
