Receptionist/Clerk for Special Services
Job Description

Purpose: The receptionist/clerk for special services will provide clerical

support to assist with the efficient operation of the special service
program. The clerk will work closely with the secretary of special
services and respond to a wide range of requests in a manner that
creates a positive first impression of Derby Public Schools.

Responsible to: Director of Special Services

Salary: District Clerical Hourly Rate Schedule, Level 2

Classification of Employment: Non-Exempt

Date: July 2019

Qualifications:

1. High school diploma or equivalent.
2. Demonstrated typing and filing skills.
3. Experience as a secretary.
4. Experience in using various computers and computer applications.
5. Possess good oral and written communication skills.
6. Demonstrated commitment to continue career development and life-long

learning.

Essential Functions:

1. Knowledge, Skill and Abilities

a. Provide office and clerical support to assist with the efficient operation of

the Special Services department.
b. Ensure that all activities conform to district guidelines.
c. Communicate effectively with patrons and staff of the school district.
d. React to change productively and handle other tasks as assigned.
e. Appropriately operate all equipment as required.
f. Ability to work with minimal supervision.
g. Ability to maintain confidentiality
h. Support the value of an education.
i. Support the philosophy and mission of Derby Public Schools.
j. Comply with all district policies, rules and regulations.

2. Physical Requirements/Environmental Conditions:

a. Requires the ability to sit and/or stand for prolonged periods.
b. Requires the ability to stoop, bend, and reach.
c. Requires the ability to manually move, lift, pull or push heavy objects or

materials.
d. Must work in noisy and crowded environments.
e. Requires regular attendance and/or physical presence at the job.

General Responsibilities:

1. Screen visitors and telephone calls, directing them to the appropriate

person/department in a professional and efficient manner.
2. Screen and route incoming mail.
3. Type, and copy correspondence, reports, bulletins, records, newsletters,

handbooks, records and other materials.
4. Assist in scheduling and responding to questions regarding early childhood

screenings.
5. Assist in maintaining a current list of all special services paraprofessionals,

substitute paraprofessionals, and certified staff.
6. Help process inservice paperwork for the paraprofessionals and document the

number of inservice hours credited.
7. Be prepared to respond to questions from paraprofessionals (including

substitutes) regarding upcoming inservices available, and inservice points
accrued.

8. Make copies of requested materials/records sent internally and externally.
9. Assist with faxing documents and disseminating information to the correct

personnel.
10. Adhere to all district health and safety policies.
11. Other duties as assigned by the Director of Special Services which are consistent

with the general requirements and qualifications of the position.
