Security Officer – 801 Grand / Principal Building
Location: Des Moines, IA

Job Summary
We are seeking vigilant and customer-service-oriented Entrance Security Screeners to join our public safety team in Des Moines, IA. In this vital role, you will serve as the first line of safety for patients, visitors, and healthcare staff by ensuring prohibited weapons and hazardous items do not enter the facility. You will operate screening equipment, perform visual and physical checks, and maintain a welcoming yet secure environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate Screening Equipment: Utilize walk-through metal detectors, handheld wands, and x-ray or bag inspection tools to check incoming individuals and personal belongings.
- Detect & Intercept Weapons: Identify firearms, bladed weapons, pepper spray, and other non-permitted items, following strict facility protocols for safe confiscation or entry denial.
- Visitor Engagement & Customer Service: Greet patients and visitors professionally, explaining screening procedures calmly to de-escalate tension and maintain a seamless entry process.
- Incident Response & Reporting: Partner closely with onsite hospital security officers and law enforcement during safety incidents, maintaining accurate daily shift logs and incident reports.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Education: High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Experience: Prior experience in security, law enforcement, military service, customer service, or TSA/access-control screening preferred.
- Skills: Strong situational awareness, clear oral communication, and conflict de-escalation skills.
- Physical Demands: Ability to stand and walk for extended periods, twist, bend, and lift up to 25 lbs during bag inspections.
- Background Check: Must successfully complete a comprehensive criminal background check, drug screening, and facility onboarding requirements.
