Position Title: GENETIC COUNSELOR

Position Purpose:
Involved in the evaluation and genetic counseling of children and adults with an immense variety of genetic conditions, and to families of diverse ethnic backgrounds. Meet the qualifications to provide care for patients in their assigned clinical area. Perform duties to provide the highest level of patient care and maximize patient satisfaction. Work closely with Cytogenetics, Molecular genetics, and Biochemical genetics laboratories. This clinic is integrally involved in the training of genetic counseling students as well as medical students, residents, and fellows. Opportunities for continued learning are encouraged and available through participation in weekly conferences, grand rounds, and regional and national conferences.
Education/Qualifications:
Master’s degree in genetic counseling from an American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) accredited graduate training program.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
- ABGC Active Candidate Status.
- ABGC board certification.
- Temporary to full license in the State of Michigan within 3 years of employment.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Collects, reviews, interprets and discusses comprehensive clinical information including medical, educational, family and prenatal histories for subspecialty patient encounter with documentation and EMR requirements.
2. Works under the supervision and direction of the Division Chief, Genetics, Genomics and Metabolic Disorders.
3. Determines and provides current literature on the natural history, clinical phenotype, mode of inheritance and recurrence risk, testing modalities of genetic and metabolic disorders.
4. Provides information, coordinates and interprets genetic testing.
5. Provides support services and facilitates informed decision making about genetic testing options to patients and their families.
6. Identifies and utilizes national and community resources that can assist patients and their families with medical, financial, educational and psychosocial support.
7. Participates and assists in departmental clinical, educational and research endeavors.
8. Acquires knowledge for new technology and policy/procedure revisions.
9. All other duties as assigned.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
1. Knowledge and proficiency in Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system, word processing and file management using Microsoft Office and other software as required by the department.
2. Knowledge and proficiency in written, oral, and electronic communication skills.
3. Ability to effectively function in an interdisciplinary environment.
4. Ability to demonstrate competence in delivery of prompt and effective clinical care.
5. Demonstrates flexibility in response to unexpected changes in workload, staffing and scheduling.
6. Demonstrate research skills (self-education). Identifying information and sources including medical literature and experts, and then extracting relevant information for patients.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The employee regularly works in a clean, well-lighted, temperature controlled, and smoke-free environment. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Minimal risk of exposure to noxious substances and infectious agents.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The employee must be able to perform a combination of sitting, standing and walking. Must have the ability to hear within normal range and possess the physical capability and hand dexterity to operate basic office equipment.
Working Conditions:
1. Occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds with or without assistance.
2. Able to complete duties under stress, deadlines, and while attending to multiple duties simultaneously.
3. Prolonged computer related exposure, as well as sitting and standing at workstations for long periods of time.
4. Noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
5. Bending, sitting, and standing frequently throughout the day.
6. Occasionally travel off-site for meetings, conferences, seminars, and training.
EXEMPT STATUS: This position is exempt from overtime pay provisions of the Federal Fair Labor Standards Act.
