JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: House Supervisor Job Family: Managerial

DATE: January 24, 2026 Class Code No: 14-318

DEPARTMENT: Nursing Revised:6/1/2023

Hours 7:00pm-7:00am every other weekend and 2 nights a week

GENERAL SUMMARY:

The House Supervisor plans, collaborates with the Nursing Manager to direct the patient units. Assures the provision of patient care, maintains a safe and therapeutic environment and coordinates activities of the unit with medical staff and other departments. Provides direction, education and leadership to all nursing personnel for an assigned patient care unit.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. In consultation with the Director of Nursing, CNO, or Nurse Manager, Patient Care Services develops short and long-range goals and objectives for areas of responsibility.

2. Patient Care:Plans for and supervises the delivery of care to all patients admitted to the unit.

A. Maintains standards of patient care.

B. Assures the Compliance of a patient care plan for each patient.

C. Assigns of personnel based on patient needs and staff preparation and availability.

D. Observes and evaluates nursing care provided by making frequent patient rounds, conferences with medical staff, and regular review of nursing documentation.

E. Serves as a role model and a resource to staff for complex patient care problems.

3. Management Responsibilities:

A. Responsible for maintenance of discipline in accordance with policy and contractual agreements.

B. Schedules staff to quality nursing care on a 24-hour basis.

C. Evaluates individual work performances through direct observation of care provided, discussion with patients and review of documentation.

D. Assures that assigned personnel are prepared to function safely and effectively.

E. Works with other hospital departments to resolve problems and coordinate services to the unit.

F. Adjusts staffing based on changes in patient census, patient acuity, and unit of service (NHPPD) goals.

G. Conducts regular unit meetings to discuss patient care needs and unit operations

as necessary.

H. Develops and implements standards of patient care, policies and procedures for Division of Nursing.

Administration:

4. Assumes responsibility for special projects as assigned.

5. Performs other related duties as assigned and as judgment and necessity dictate.

SUPERVISION:

Reports to the Director of Nursing, Chief Nursing Officer. Supervises a staff comprised of Staff Nurses, LPN’s, Nursing Assistants, Patient Care Technicians, Undergraduate Nurse Externs, Unit Secretaries and other support personnel assigned to the area.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

1. MINIMUM EDUCATION: Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in Michigan. BSN required. MSN preferred.

2. MINIMUM WORK EXPERIENCE: Three (3) to five (5) years current staff nurse experience with at least one (1) year in the area of specialty required. One (1) year current leadership experience as Nursing Supervisor or Charge Nurse.

3. CONTACT WITH OTHERS: Demonstrated interpersonal communication abilities required interacting with the public and all levels of the hospital staff. Expected to float or be pulled to any other area as needed.

4. ANALYTICAL DEMANDS: Performs duties as assigned and as judgment and necessity dictate.

5. CERTIFICATION, LICENSURE: Registered Nurse License in the State of Michigan. Certification in specialty preferred

WORKING CONDITIONS:

1. PHYSICAL EFFORT: Long periods of standing and walking.

2. WORK ENVIRONMENT: Works in a well-lighted and well-ventilated environment.

3. EQUIPMENT USED: Medical/office equipment necessary to perform specific tasks/duties.
