Position Overview
Detroit Charter Company is hiring Seasonal Deckhand / Steward(ess) team members to support guest-facing sailing charters on the Detroit River. This is a combined role that includes traditional deckhand responsibilities and onboard food and beverage service.
Crew members in this position are responsible for guest boarding and safety, line handling during departure and return to the dock, and preparing and serving food and beverages during the charter. This role is central to delivering a safe, polished, and enjoyable guest experience.
Marine Experience & Waterfront Environment
This role operates in an active marine and waterfront environment. Prior boating-related experience—such as sailing, powerboating, marina operations, gas dock work, boat detailing, yacht clubs, or other on-water roles—is strongly preferred. Candidates should be comfortable working on and around the water and able to confidently connect with guests in a maritime setting.
Core Responsibilities
Vessel Support
· Line handling during departure and return to the dock
· Assisting the captain with docking and undocking procedures
· Assisting guests safely on and off the vessel
· Maintaining a clear, orderly, and safe deck during charters
· Monitoring conditions and guest movement for safety
Guest Service Duties
· Greeting guests and assisting with boarding
· Preparing and serving food and beverages during the charter
· Maintaining guest seating and common areas
· Monitoring guest comfort and responding to needs
· Assisting with setup and breakdown before and after each charter
Safety Responsibilities
· Supporting onboard safety procedures
· Assisting guests with movement on deck as needed
· Maintaining awareness of guest behavior and conditions
· Following captain direction at all times
Alcohol Service RequirementApplicants must be at least 18 years of age, which is the legal minimum age in Michigan to serve alcohol. This role includes preparing and serving alcoholic beverages in accordance with the vessel’s liquor license, company policy, and all applicable state and local regulations. Crew members are expected to serve responsibly, monitor guest consumption, and follow all safety and compliance procedures.
Alcohol Safety TrainingCrew members involved in the preparation or service of alcoholic beverages are required to complete TIPS or equivalent alcohol safety training as designated by the Company. Training may be completed prior to the start of the season or within a reasonable period after hire.
Qualifications
· Prior experience in boating, sailing, hospitality, restaurants, events, or bartending preferred
· Comfortable working on the water and on a moving vessel
· Professional, friendly, and guest-focused demeanor
· Able to follow instructions and safety procedures
· Comfortable handling lines and assisting with docking
· Reliable availability during weekends and peak summer periods
No USCG credentials are required for this position.
This safety-sensitive role requires participation in a USCG-approved drug testing consortium as required by company policy.
Work Schedule
· Charters and shifts are typically approximately 3 hours in duration, with the possibility of multiple charters or shifts in a single day
· Weekend, evening, and holiday availability required
· Schedules vary based on charter demand and weather
Compensation
· Compensation is $18–$25 per hour, based on experience
· Tips may be received depending on charter type
