Full Job Description

HOURS ARE MONDAY-FRIDAY 05:30AM-02:30PM

Summary

The role of a Histology Assistant is to perform a variety of administrative and clerical tasks within the Histology Laboratory. Duties of the Histology Assistant include providing support to the histotechnologists, managers, supervisors, employees and pathologists.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

· Maintain the daily flow of work through the histology laboratory.

· Maintain organization and cleanliness in the lab, including the removal of lab waste.

· Monitor inventory of the lab.

· Monitors infection control and universal precautions adherence by all persons who enter the lab.

· Assist Histotechnologists with ancillary tasks, such as receiving test orders, assembling materials for processing, reprocessing materials, loading & unloading IHCs.

· Provide embedding and special stain support under guidance of a histotechnologist.

· Management of histology blocks & slides such as labeling, coverslipping, staining, filing, and moving/discarding materials.

· Documentation, tracking, and logging of materials.

· Quality control of processed blocks & slides.

· Case assembly & distribution to pathologists by the assigned deadlines.

· Maintain accurate daily records such as temperature logs, QC logs, etc.

· Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of equipment and instrumentation (processors, stainers, coverslippers, etc.).

· Ensure compliance with all local, federal, CLIA, and CAP regulations.

Education and/or Experience

High School Diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Language Skills

· Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

· Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

· Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

Mathematical Skills

· Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

· Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Reasoning Ability

· Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.

· Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Computer Skills

Microsoft Office Word, Excel, Outlook, Internet Software such as IE, Chrome, etc.
