Full Job Description

Position Summary

The Swimmer / Aquatic Support Specialist provides direct support to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities during aquatic activities, therapeutic exercises, and recreation programs. This position plays an essential role in helping individuals participate safely in water-based occupational therapy (OT), physical therapy (PT), exercise, and leisure activities.

The ideal candidate is energetic, physically capable, safety-minded, and passionate about helping people achieve their goals. This role requires significant physical stamina, strength, and the ability to provide hands-on assistance in and around the pool environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Provide direct support and supervision to individuals during aquatic activities.
Assist individuals with safely entering, exiting, and navigating the pool environment.
Support therapy goals and therapeutic exercises as directed by therapists and care teams.
Utilize proper lifting, transferring, and positioning techniques.
Provide physical assistance to individuals with varying levels of mobility.
Encourage participation, independence, and skill development.
Monitor individual safety and well-being at all times.
Assist with changing room routines and preparation for pool activities as needed.
Maintain positive, professional relationships with individuals served, families, and team members.
Document participation and report concerns, incidents, or progress to supervisors.
Follow all agency policies, safety procedures, and confidentiality requirements.
Perform other duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements

This position is highly active and requires:

Strong swimming skills and comfort working in a pool environment.
Ability to be in the water for extended periods.
Ability to lift, transfer, and support individuals with mobility challenges.
Frequent bending, reaching, squatting, pushing, pulling, and standing.
Ability to safely assist individuals weighing up to agency-established lifting guidelines.
Sufficient stamina to perform several hours of physical support and "big body work" during aquatic therapy sessions.
Ability to respond quickly in emergency situations.

Required:

Minimum age of 18 years.
Ability to swim confidently and safely.
Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record (if transportation duties are assigned).
Ability to pass required background checks.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Preferred:

Experience working with individuals with disabilities.
Lifeguard certification, CPR, and First Aid certification.
Background in exercise science, education, recreation, therapy, nursing, or related fields.
College students pursuing healthcare, therapy, education, social work, or human services careers are encouraged to apply.
