Position Summary:
The Medical Assistant plays a key role in supporting providers and ensuring the smooth delivery of high-quality, compassionate care. Responsibilities include preparing exam rooms, collecting vital signs, documenting in the electronic health record (EHR), assisting with procedures, and providing patient education. Medical Assistants are expected to perform their duties with efficiency, cost-awareness, and sensitivity to patient needs.
They uphold patient rights and privacy while creating a respectful, confidential, and safe environment for patients, families, and team members. This role embodies our organizational pillars of Access, Stewardship, and Quality by reducing barriers to care, utilizing resources responsibly, and promoting excellent clinical outcomes.
Essential Functions:

Room patients in a timely manner before they are seen by medical providers. This includes accurately taking and recording the patient's vital signs, chief medical complaint, and medical, surgical, and social histories.

Assists medical providers with in-room patient care for requested procedures. Performs blood draws, specimen collection, wound care, ear washes, throat cultures, injections, pregnancy tests, electrocardiograph procedures, and other lab duties as delegated. Completes lab paperwork in accordance with current protocol.
- Keeps exam rooms cleaned, sterilized, and stocked between patients. Performs sterilization or disposal of contaminated supplies. Informs supervisor of need for supplies, repairs, and equipment. Performs all scheduled controls and tests on medical equipment in accordance with the manufacturer's guidelines. Performs cleaning and sterilization on all medical equipment according to manufacturer guidelines.

Consistently, accurately, and objectively documents patient interactions and other information in EHR. Charting is accurate, timely, appropriate, and understandable.

Completes the lab tracking process in a timely and thorough manner, as described in the lab policy—complete lab callbacks as delegated by the provider.

Checks and documents phone calls to the prescription refill line. Processes internal prescription dispensing according to protocol.

Maintains all aspects of patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA requirements.

Maintains compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration regulations and provides medical assistance per those guidelines. Responsible for maintaining knowledge of such regulations and for the application of such guidelines in the workplace.

At times, it may work closely with Health Educators and Healthcare Providers.

Collects and enters patient information about health history, behavioral health, and substance use.

Education/Experience:

At least one (1) year of experience in a clinical setting or equivalent as a combination of education and experience.

High School education or equivalent.

Current CPR certification.

Nice to Have:

An associate's or bachelor's degree is preferred, or completion of a medical assistant or certified nursing assistant program, or EMT training. (While experience is preferred, it is not required. We are willing to train those in this position through our in-house 12-month Medical Assistant training program, which meets the certification criteria and requirements needed for obtaining Medical Assistant Certification by the NHA.)

Previous non-profit and/or volunteer experience.

Ability to speak the Spanish language preferred (bilingual).

The work environment is in a healthcare setting, which can be fast-paced and involves working directly with patients and healthcare professionals. The environment is primarily clinical, but the individual may also work in a clerical setting.
