Who We Are
We are a non-public, therapeutic day school that provides special education alternatives to students utilizing the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). We accept students diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, developmental delay, students previously diagnosed as having PDD-NOS, intellectual and specific learning disorders & other health impairments.
Our Vision
Our vision is to provide students with autism and related disabilities in pre-K-8th grade, who have not been able to make progress in a less restrictive environment, a high-quality instructional ABA program within an individually motivating environment in which they can meet or exceed IEP goals and demonstrate increased skills across curriculum-based assessments.
Summary of Duties
The Occupational Therapist ("OT") will work with the classroom personnel to develop, monitor, and implement educational and clinical programming related to occupational therapy goals for students with autism and related disabilities. Utilizing a consultative service model, the OT demonstrates and develops activities and instruction to support student goals, works with the students, completes student assessments and reports, observes the classroom staff working with the student(s), monitors and reports on students’ progress, reviews data, models various therapeutic and teaching strategies for staff, provides corrective feedback to staff, and directly works with the student to revise or probe techniques. The OT ensures that students continue to make progress on OT goals and collaborates with the IEP team on the development and monitoring of each child’s IEP. In addition, the OT will consult with teachers, instructors, parents, and outside service therapists as well as provide initial and ongoing trainings on programming related to occupational therapy for all faculty and staff as necessary.
Fundamental Responsibilities
- The OT is expected to engage in active consultation with all classroom staff, parents, and, as needed outside therapists working with students on their caseloads.
- Conducts formal and informal observations and skill probes of individual students.
- Administration and formal documentation of assessments as needed for treatment programming and IEP development.
- Contributes to the development of IEP recommendations for students and document and discuss students’ present levels of performance, goals, and progress reports during IEP meetings.
- Participates in SETT meetings, or other meetings, as needed.
- Provides initial and ongoing trainings for all staff in the areas of occupational therapy as assigned by supervisor or as deemed necessary by supervisor.
- Consults with teachers, instructors, parents, and outside service therapists as needed regarding student progress and treatment.
- Volunteers and assists with school related activities and events.
Qualifications
- Ability to effectively implement behavior, crisis, and physical intervention procedures.
- Displays the ability to maintenance and order of OT equipment on a regular basis.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Follows policies and procedures; Completes tasks correctly and on time or notifies appropriate person with an alternate plan; Plans for additional resources; Supports organization's goals and values.
- Displays original thinking and creativity; Meets challenges with resourcefulness; Generates suggestions for improving work; Develops innovative approaches and ideas.
Education and Experience - Occupational Therapist
- Master’s degree; graduation from an accredited Occupational Therapy program, plus the required clinical internship for professional registration.
- Satisfactory completion of Certification Examination of National Board for Certification of Occupational Therapists.
- Hold an Occupational Therapy License for the State of Illinois.
- A combined minimum of 3 years of school-based and clinical experience in areas of Occupational Therapy with individuals with autism across a variety of age ranges and abilities.
- Experience administering various formal and informal assessments.
- Understanding of Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) training is preferred but not required.
