Full Job Description

Position Summary

We are seeking a dedicated and dynamic Nurse Practitioner to join the Pediatric Plastic Surgery team within the Department of Surgery at Columbia University Irving Medical Center (CUIMC). The role primarily focuses on providing comprehensive outpatient care, with additional responsibilities that include inpatient rounding with occasional travel to Westchester and Weill Cornell Medicine (WCM) offices as needed. The Nurse Practitioner will work closely with Chief of Plastics and will play an integral role in supporting faculty efforts to grow and develop the Pediatric Plastic Surgery section. Core responsibilities include patient assessment, diagnosis, treatment, prescribing, and education in an office-based setting. In the role of Clinical Coordinator, the Nurse Practitioner will help lead and coordinate various multi-disciplinary teams involving Section Faculty. This includes participation in the Cleft and Craniofacial Teams at CUIMC, Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital (MSCH), and WCM; Interdisciplinary Craniosynostosis Clinics; VPI Clinics; and Multi-Disciplinary Microtia Clinics.

Responsibilities

Outpatient Clinic

Screen new patients, including reviewing and uploading outside medical records, imaging, radiology reports, and operative notes.
Ensure all relevant clinical information is obtained and reviewed prior to the patient’s visit.
Manage weekly outpatient clinic operations, with some responsibilities for inpatient rounding and discharge planning.
Serve as a liaison between clinic patients/families and referring healthcare providers to ensure seamless communication and care coordination.
Place appropriate medical orders following clinic visits.
Follow up on laboratory results, imaging studies, and specialist consultations.
Coordinate and perform pre-operative evaluations for surgical patients, collaborating closely with other services for patients undergoing combined procedures.
Educate and support patients and families regarding craniofacial diagnoses, available treatment options, and community resources.
Triage incoming phone calls from patients, families, and referring providers, ensuring timely and appropriate responses.
Maintain clear and consistent communication with referring providers to facilitate continuity of care.
Coordinate surgical schedules for Craniofacial and Pediatric Plastic Surgery patients, ensuring operative dates are confirmed and all pre-operative requirements are fulfilled.
Participate in clinical research and/or serve as a nurse first assist in the operating room, if desired and appropriate.

Multi-Disciplinary Clinics

Independently manage care for adolescent craniofacial patients and build a clinical practice for select conditions (e.g., macromastia, positional plagiocephaly), ensuring timely evaluation and management.
Ensure reliable access to care for all craniofacial patients, including urgent post-operative evaluations as needed.
Organize and coordinate monthly multi-disciplinary clinics, including the preparation and distribution of team reports.
Lead efforts in coordinating institutional family support programs such as Cleft Lip and Palate Team Day and Prenatal Support Groups, integrating these with national advocacy organizations (e.g., ACPA, myFace).Plan and execute educational events such as conferences, symposia, workshops, and outreach initiatives sponsored by the Craniofacial and Pediatric Plastic Surgery practice.
Develop and maintain an electronic library of patient education and medical reference materials.
Collaborate with the departmental marketing team to promote the practice through public engagements, educational content, marketing materials, web presence, and partnerships with external organizations and pediatric care providers.

Minimum Qualifications

Nurse Practitioners: Master of Science in Nursing.
3-5 years of related experience.

Minimum licensing/certifications required upon start date:

ANCC Board Certification.
NYS RN and NP license.
BLS Certification.
NYS DEA License.

Preferred Qualifications

Prior experience with Craniofacial Plastic Surgery preferred.
Prior pediatric experience is preferred.
FNP or PNP (FNP with peds experience preferred.

Other Requirements

Proven ability to perform comprehensive histories and physical examinations across a diverse patient population.
Strong clinical judgment and organizational skills to manage and coordinate a patient caseload efficiently.
Experience working collaboratively within established protocols and under a collaborative agreement with physicians and interdisciplinary healthcare teams.
Demonstrated leadership skills and the ability to function autonomously while fostering effective collaboration with peers, physicians, and other team members.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with a professional and compassionate demeanor.
Comfort and professionalism in interactions with patients, families, physicians, and support staff across various settings.
Eagerness to learn, adapt, and take initiative in providing independent patient care.
Strong commitment to teamwork and a patient-centered approach to care delivery.
Prior Clinical Experience working as an Advanced Practice Nurse Practitioner.
