Full Job Description

Neurosurgeon, Medical Director

Dothan, AL | $650,000 to $900,000 per year | Full-Time | On-Site

Southeast Health is a 420-bed not-for-profit tertiary referral center in Dothan, Alabama, operating a comprehensive neurosurgical program with 24/7 neurosurgery coverage, employed neurosurgeons, and a fellowship-trained neuroendovascular interventionalist on staff. The facility is one of three Comprehensive Stroke Centers in Alabama and maintains a dedicated neuroendovascular lab. Southeast Health is seeking a board-certified or board-eligible Neurosurgeon to serve as Medical Director of its neurosurgical and spine service line, combining a full surgical practice with clinical and operational leadership across a multidisciplinary program.

Schedule

Day shift with call responsibilities. Call expectations are structured around the neurosurgical program's coverage needs. This is a full-time, permanent position at 1.0 FTE.

Compensation

$650,000 to $900,000 annually, commensurate with surgical volume, experience, and leadership scope.

What You'll Do

The Medical Director maintains a full general neurosurgical practice covering the complete range of cranial and spine procedures. The surgical practice is supported by a Level 2 trauma center staffed by emergency medicine residency-trained physicians, a dedicated neuroendovascular lab, 24/7 neurosurgery coverage infrastructure already in place, and subspecialty support across all major specialties. Three MRI units including a 3-Tesla scanner and three CT scanners including a fixed 64-slice unit are available on campus.

In the Medical Director role, the physician provides clinical leadership for neurosurgical and spine services and works directly with hospital administration on program development and expansion, operating room and equipment planning including microscopes, navigation systems, and spine instrumentation, workflow optimization, and standardization of clinical pathways and protocols. The Medical Director establishes and monitors quality and outcome metrics, leads quality assurance and performance improvement initiatives, and contributes to the development and implementation of departmental clinical policies.

The position requires maintaining referral relationships with primary care providers, neurology, orthopedics, and spine specialists across the regional service area. The Medical Director participates in multidisciplinary committee work, contributes to short- and long-term service line strategy, engages in financial oversight including case volume analysis, resource utilization, and operational efficiency, and communicates clinical and operational priorities to hospital leadership and staff.

Required Qualifications

Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from an accredited program
Completion of an ACGME-accredited Neurosurgery residency program
Board certification or active board eligibility in Neurosurgery through the American Board of Neurological Surgery (ABNS)
Active Alabama medical license or eligibility to obtain prior to start
DEA registration or eligibility
Ability to obtain medical staff privileges within the organization
ACLS certification
Demonstrated competency across general neurosurgical procedures including cranial and spine cases

Preferred Qualifications

Fellowship training in spine, cerebrovascular, or neuroendovascular surgery
Prior experience in a physician leadership, medical director, or service line leadership role
Experience with neurosurgical program development, OR equipment planning, or service line expansion
Familiarity with Level 2 trauma center neurosurgical coverage expectations
Established referral network in the southeast Alabama or Wiregrass region
Experience with quality metric reporting and neurosurgical outcomes programs
