Position Summary
The Service Engineer is responsible for the installation, commissioning, maintenance, troubleshooting, and technical support of industrial measurement and control systems at customer facilities throughout North America. The position serves as a key technical interface between customers, field personnel, and internal engineering teams, ensuring reliable system performance, timely resolution of technical issues, and a high level of customer satisfaction.
Key Responsibilities
- Install, commission, configure, calibrate, and troubleshoot industrial measurement systems and associated hardware, software, instrumentation, and control components.
- Perform system start-up, functional testing, performance verification, and final acceptance activities at customer sites.
- Supervise and coordinate new installations and system upgrades with customers, OEMs, contractors, electricians, mill personnel, and other technical teams.
- Diagnose and resolve complex electrical, mechanical, instrumentation, networking, PLC, and software-related issues in demanding industrial environments.
- Perform preventive and corrective maintenance, equipment inspections, repairs, component replacement, and system optimization.
- Provide remote and on-site technical support, including emergency and on-call service when required.
- Conduct systematic root-cause analysis of equipment failures and recurring system issues and implement or recommend corrective and preventive actions.
- Monitor system performance and identify opportunities to improve reliability, measurement accuracy, maintainability, and overall equipment performance.
- Develop, modify, troubleshoot, and optimize PLC programs and industrial control applications in accordance with IEC 61131 standards.
- Configure and troubleshoot industrial networks, Windows-based computers, HMIs, communication interfaces, and related software.
- Support the development, enhancement, testing, and deployment of system software and field updates.
- Identify hardware deficiencies, software bugs, and opportunities for product improvement; document findings and communicate recommendations to engineering and product-development teams.
- Maintain compliance with radiation safety requirements when working with systems utilizing ionizing radiation, including established site and regulatory procedures.
- Follow customer and company requirements for electrical safety, lockout/tagout (LOTO), PPE, and other applicable industrial safety procedures.
- Provide technical and operational training to customer operators, maintenance personnel, engineers, and other end users.
- Serve as a technical point of contact for customers during commissioning, troubleshooting, maintenance, and post-service follow-up.
- Prepare accurate and detailed commissioning, service, inspection, and troubleshooting reports documenting work performed, findings, corrective actions, and outstanding recommendations.
- Maintain and revise technical documentation, electrical drawings, system configurations, software revisions, and equipment/service records.
- Coordinate with engineering, project management, sales, and service teams to resolve customer issues and ensure successful project execution.
- Assist with identifying required replacement components, spare parts, tools, and equipment needed for field-service activities.
- Maintain appropriate service tools, test equipment, software, documentation, and spare components required to support field assignments.
- Manage multiple customer service assignments and priorities while maintaining effective communication with customers and the Service Manager.
- Represent the company professionally at customer facilities and develop strong working relationships with customer engineering, operations, and maintenance teams.
- Provide feedback from field experience to engineering and management to support continuous improvement of products, documentation, installation practices, and service procedures.
- Travel extensively throughout North America and, when required, internationally to support installations, commissioning, maintenance, troubleshooting, training, and emergency service activities.
Technical Knowledge & Skills
- Strong electrical, electronic, mechanical, and instrumentation troubleshooting skills.
- Working knowledge of industrial automation, PLCs, HMIs, sensors, drives, I/O systems, and control systems.
- Knowledge of PLC programming principles and IEC 61131 programming languages.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, mechanical drawings, P&IDs, technical manuals, and system documentation.
- Proficiency with Windows-based systems, Microsoft Office, networking, and industrial communication protocols.
- Experience with software configuration, diagnostics, and basic programming or scripting; Visual Basic experience is beneficial.
- Familiarity with industrial Ethernet and common automation communication networks and protocols is beneficial.
- Knowledge of measurement-system calibration, verification, and quality-control principles.
- Knowledge of radiation-based measurement technology and applicable radiation-safety practices is highly desirable.
- Experience in steel, aluminum, metals processing, or other heavy-industrial manufacturing environments is preferred.
- Strong analytical and root-cause troubleshooting abilities with the capacity to diagnose problems across mechanical, electrical, controls, networking, and software disciplines.
Professional & Field Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Electronics, Mechanical, Mechatronics, Automation Engineering, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent relevant experience.
- Four or more years of field service, commissioning, industrial automation, or related technical experience preferred.
- Ability to work independently at customer facilities while coordinating effectively with internal technical resources.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate technical information to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Strong customer-service orientation and ability to remain effective when troubleshooting time-sensitive production issues.
- Ability to work safely in industrial environments and comply with customer-specific safety requirements.
- Ability to work extended hours, shifts, weekends, and on-call assignments when required by customer or project needs.
- Ability and willingness to travel extensively, typically 60–75%, depending on customer and project requirements.
- Valid driver's license and ability to meet applicable customer-site and travel requirements.
- Ability to perform the physical activities associated with industrial field service, including working around production equipment and carrying service tools and test equipment.

Pay: $70,000.00 - $100,000.00 per year
