Bar Manager (Seasonal) – Tipped Position

Position Summary

Chicago Yacht Club is seeking an experienced, energetic, and service-driven Bar Manager to oversee the daily operations of our bar while supporting the overall success of our restaurant and front-of-house team. This is a working management position, requiring the successful candidate to actively bartend, lead the evening service team, and ensure exceptional hospitality for our members and guests.

This position will primarily work afternoon and evening shifts (approximately 2:00/3:00 p.m. until close) and will be responsible for closing the restaurant and bar operations. In addition to managing the bar, this individual will serve as the secondary supervisor for the front-of-house team, working closely with and supporting the Food & Beverage Manager.

This is a seasonal, tipped position. Employees who successfully complete the 90-day introductory period and demonstrate strong leadership, reliability, and performance may be considered for a permanent full-time management opportunity with Chicago Yacht Club.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Manage the day-to-day operations of the bar while maintaining exceptional service standards.
Lead by example by actively bartending during scheduled shifts while supervising the bar team.
Oversee evening restaurant operations and assist in supervising all front-of-house staff.
Serve as the acting manager in the absence of the Food & Beverage Manager.
Ensure smooth daily operations from opening through closing, with primary responsibility for closing the restaurant and bar.
Build and maintain positive working relationships with liquor, beer, and wine vendors.
Place beverage orders and manage inventory levels to ensure product availability while minimizing waste.
Monitor liquor costs, inventory, and beverage controls to maintain profitability.
Develop seasonal cocktail menus, beverage features, and promotions that enhance the member experience.
Conduct regular inventory counts and assist with cost control and budget management.
Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal liquor laws, health regulations, and food safety standards.
Recruit, interview, train, coach, and mentor bartenders and front-of-house staff.
Create staff schedules and assist with labor management to meet operational needs.
Resolve member and guest concerns professionally while maintaining Chicago Yacht Club's high standards of hospitality.
Utilize POS systems, including Aloha and/or Micros, for order processing, cash handling, reporting, and end-of-day reconciliation.
Attend department meetings and collaborate with culinary and management teams to ensure seamless service during club events and daily operations.
Perform additional duties as assigned to support the Food & Beverage Department.

Qualifications

Minimum of 3 years of bar management or hospitality management experience.
Previous bartending experience in a high-volume restaurant, private club, hotel, or hospitality environment required.
Strong knowledge of liquor, wine, beer, and craft cocktails.
Experience ordering beverage products and managing vendor relationships.
Proven experience managing inventory, beverage cost controls, and purchasing.
Demonstrated leadership experience supervising and developing hospitality staff.
Knowledge of food safety, responsible alcohol service, and hospitality best practices.
Experience with POS systems such as Aloha, Micros, or similar platforms.
Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and special events.
Ability to remain calm and make sound decisions in a fast-paced environment.
Illinois BASSET Certification (or ability to obtain upon hire) required.
Food Handler Certification required (or ability to obtain upon hire).

Physical Requirements

Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
Frequently lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
Ability to bend, reach, stoop, and work in a fast-paced environment.
Must be able to work in varying indoor and outdoor weather conditions during the boating season.
