Position Summary
The Custodial Grounds Supervisor is responsible for overseeing custodial, grounds, and related facility operations across the district to ensure all buildings and grounds are clean, safe, and ready for students, staff, and public use each day. This position provides leadership, training, scheduling, and direct operational support, while maintaining high standards for cleanliness, safety, and efficiency. The Custodial Supervisor is expected to be flexible and responsive to the daily needs of the district and may perform hands-on work as necessary.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Supervision & Leadership
- Supervise custodial and applicable grounds staff across all district facilities
- Conduct evaluations of custodial and grounds staff and provide ongoing feedback
- Demonstrate strong people management skills including coaching, accountability, and team development
- Coordinate staff crews for custodial, grounds, and seasonal work (including snow removal)
- Assist with hiring, onboarding, and training of staff
- Coordinate experimentation and implementation of cost savings business model - We do the work of grounds and snow removal
Scheduling & Staffing
- Develop and manage custodial schedules for all district buildings
- Coordinate substitute coverage and ensure operational continuity
- Provide direct coverage when needed, including performing custodial duties
- Adjust daily schedules to meet the changing needs of buildings and the department
- Plan for and be prepared for evening events and calendared items
Training & Compliance
- Train employees on cleaning procedures, chemical use, and safety practices
- Ensure compliance with all safety regulations (including chemical handling and SDS requirements)
- Provide ongoing training for equipment use, cleaning standards, and workplace safety
Custodial Operations (Primary Focus)
- Ensure all buildings are clean, safe, and ready for school, public use, and the next day (top priority)
- Clean, Shiny, and Smells Good!
- Oversee all custodial functions, including cleaning standards, chemical use, and sanitation procedures
- Develop and implement custodial procedures and best practices
- Manage and oversee deep cleaning schedules across all buildings

Supplies & Vendor Management
- Maintain working relationships with supply vendors and explore best purchasing options
- Order and manage inventory of cleaning supplies, chemicals, and custodial equipment
- Ensure proper storage, labeling, and cost-effective use of supplies
Routine Maintenance Support
- Perform and/or oversee minor facility maintenance, including:
- Changing light bulbs
- Replacing outlet covers
- Minor wall repairs
- Replacing sprinkler heads (non-wiring or piping)
- Coordinate repainting
- Assist with floor care, including:
- Refinishing floors (training provided)
- Waxing VCT flooring (training provided)
- Supporting gym floor maintenance (training provided)
- Coordinate with Maintenance Department on larger projects as requested and scheduled
Grounds & Exterior Maintenance
- Oversee grounds maintenance, including:
- Mowing and general landscaping
- Irrigation system monitoring and minor adjustments
- Fertilizer and weed control application
- Coordinate seasonal and contract work as needed
- Develop and maintain a business plan for district-run lawn care removal services
Snow Removal Operations
- Manage district snow removal operations, including:
- Coordinating staff crews
- Overseeing equipment use and readiness
- Managing temporary contracts when necessary
- Coordinate seasonal and contract work as needed
- Develop and maintain a business plan for district-run snow removal services
Facilities Access & Security
- Manage building access including keys and fobs
- Ensure proper control, tracking, and distribution of access credentials
Coordination & Operational Support
- Coordinate with Maintenance Department on large-scale or specialized projects
- Assist with receiving and unloading deliveries, including grocery/food shipments
- Support special events, facility use, and emergency response needs
Equipment Management
- Oversee custodial, grounds, and snow removal equipment
- Ensure proper use, maintenance, and readiness of equipment
- Coordinate repairs and replacements as needed
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong leadership and personnel management skills
- Knowledge of custodial, grounds, and basic maintenance practices
- Ability to develop procedures and improve operational systems
- Strong organizational and scheduling skills
- Ability to be flexible and adapt to daily operational needs
- Effective communication and problem-solving skills
- Working knowledge of cleaning chemicals, safety standards, and equipment
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, and reaching
- Ability to perform custodial, grounds, and light maintenance tasks
Working Conditions
- Work performed in school buildings, outdoor environments, and maintenance facilities
- Exposure to cleaning chemicals, weather conditions, and equipment
- Occasional evening, weekend, overtime, or emergency work required
- Overtime when approved by supervisor/superintendent
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Experience in custodial, facilities, or grounds work
- Supervisory experience preferred
- Valid driver's license
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in a school or institutional setting
- Knowledge of safety regulations and chemical handling
- Experience with scheduling, inventory, and vendor coordination

- This position will need to work with and be trained by the facilities supervisor.
- Supervisory period will last at minimum a year

Pay: $27.87 - $42.02 per hour
