Assesses patients' overall cardiopulmonary status by inspection, palpitation, percussion, auscultation, and patient or guardian/significant other interview; documents patients' vital signs.

Performs the full range of ventilatory care services as prescribed by a physician, including selecting, setting up, and operating a variety of devices such as medication delivery units, humidifiers, positive-pressure breathing machines, and continuous mechanical ventilators in critical care units.

Coordinates complex therapies, such as Inhaled Nitric Oxide (INO therapy), high frequency ventilation, and heliox therapy, and performs Non-Bronchoscopic mini-BAL procedures to provide a non-bronchoscopic method of attaining a sample of bonchoalveolar fluid in the mechanically ventilated patient for the diagnosis of ventilator associated pneumonia (VAP).

Performs arterial punctures, intubations and other procedures as ordered by a physician and designated according to the facility's policies and procedures.

Assists the physician with the insertion of tracheostomy tubes, and may perform reinsertion of tubes, as needed.

REQUIREMENTS TO QUALIFY:
One (1) year of experience at the level of a Respiratory Care Practitioner administering basic respiratory therapy care AND Either:
An associate degree in respiratory therapy from an accredited college or university
-OR-
A certificate of completion of an approved two-year training program in respiratory therapy
License/Certificate:
A California State Respiratory Care Practitioner's License issued by the Respiratory Care Board of California -AND- Certificate of completion of Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
Although not required at the time of application, depending on area of assignment, positions may require one of the following specialty certifications:

Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)

Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
Withhold Information:
No withhold will be allowed for this examination. Required education and licensure must be fully met at the time of filing and clearly indicated on the application.
Driver License: A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.
Physical Class 3 - Moderate:
Moderate: includes standing or walking most of the time, with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, and reaching; includes working on irregular surfaces, occasionally lifting objects weighing over 25 pounds and frequently lifting of 10-25 pounds.
Desirable Qualification:
Additional credit will be given to applicants who possess the following desirable qualifications in excess of the requirement:

Experience as a licensed Respiratory Care Practitioner beyond the requirements.
A Bachelor of Science degree- in Respiratory Care from an accredited college or university.
A Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) certification- from National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC).
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION:
- Respiratory Care Practitioner provides basic respiratory care, including continuous ventilation, to patients with respiratory disorders or deficiencies.
You may still qualify even if your job title isn’t exactly the same as the ones listed. What matters is that your experience is at a similar level — meaning your job involves similar responsibilities, requires comparable skills and knowledge, and takes place within a similar organizational structure. To validate your license, ensure that the License and Certification Section of the application is complete. List the title, license number, issue date, expiration date, and issuing agency for all required licenses. All required licenses and certifications should be active and without restrictions.
EXAMINATION CONTENT:
This assessment type will evaluate the education, training and experience you list on the online application and supplemental questionnaire and assign a score based on a standardized scoring system. This portion of the assessment represents 100% of your total score and examines: Requirements, Desirable Qualifications, and Supplemental Questionnaire.
Achieving a passing score of 70% or higher on the assessment is needed to be added to the list.
ELIGIBILITY AND VACANCY INFORMATION:
Applicants who passed the assessment are placed on a list in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months. Applications will be processed as they are received and added to the list accordingly. We will use this list to fill vacancies in the DHS as they occur.
No person may compete in this examination more than once every twelve (12) months.
