POSITION SUMMARY
UTI is seeking an experienced Survey Party Chief to join our Survey team. This position is responsible for leading field survey operations, directing survey crews, planning and executing survey projects, and ensuring the accuracy and quality of survey deliverables.
The Survey Party Chief serves as the technical leader in the field and is expected to operate independently with limited oversight on most projects. This role performs a combination of field and office responsibilities, including project planning, survey data collection, construction staking, GNSS processing, survey calculations, QA/QC reviews, and preparation of survey deliverables.
The ideal candidate is an experienced surveying professional with strong technical expertise, excellent problem-solving skills, and the ability to lead, mentor, and develop less-experienced Survey Technicians while ensuring projects are completed safely, accurately, and efficiently.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
· Lead and execute field survey operations for utility, pipeline, facility, and construction projects.
· Plan daily survey activities, establish field workflows, and direct assigned survey personnel.
· Perform topographic, boundary, route, utility, construction, and as-built surveys.
· Conduct construction staking and layout activities for a variety of infrastructure projects.
· Operate GNSS, robotic total station, and data collection equipment to collect accurate field data.
· Process survey data, perform calculations, and prepare survey deliverables.
· Perform QA/QC reviews of field and office work to ensure survey accuracy and completeness.
· Support subsurface utility engineering (SUE), utility investigations, and conflict resolution efforts.
· Coordinate with landowners, contractors, utility representatives, and client field personnel.
· Mentor and train survey staff to support their professional development.
· Follow all safety, operational, and quality assurance procedures.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Field Survey Leadership
- Lead field survey crews and direct daily survey activities.
- Plan and organize field work to meet project objectives, schedules, and quality standards.
- Establish project control and determine appropriate survey methodologies.
- Make independent field decisions regarding data collection strategies, survey procedures, and project execution.
- Communicate field progress, challenges, and project needs to survey management and project teams.
- Train, mentor, and provide technical guidance to survey staff and others.
Survey Operations
- Perform topographic, boundary, route, utility, construction, and as-built surveys.
- Execute construction staking and layout for pipeline, utility, facility, and civil infrastructure projects.
- Collect, verify, and document survey data using GNSS, robotic total station, and related technologies.
- Support integrity excavation activities, utility conflict investigations, and facility surveys.
- Call in utility locate requests, perform utility locating activities, verify existing utility information, and assist with utility conflict resolution.
- Support subsurface utility engineering (SUE) efforts and utility mapping projects.
Data Processing & Quality Control
- Import, process, and manage survey data collected in the field.
- Process GNSS observations and perform survey calculations and adjustments.
- Prepare construction staking files and field-ready data.
- Review collected information for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with project requirements.
- Perform QA/QC reviews of survey data and deliverables.
- Create survey linework, mapping, and project deliverables using CAD software when required.
- Coordinate with surveyors, engineers, designers, and project teams during project execution.
Safety & Professionalism
- Promote and maintain a strong safety culture on all projects.
- Ensure compliance with company safety procedures and client requirements.
- Operate company vehicles and equipment safely and responsibly.
- Represent UTI professionally when interacting with landowners, contractors, utility operators, and client personnel.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
· High school diploma or GED.
· Minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible field surveying experience.
· Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
· Ability to pass a DOT drug screen and background check.
· Demonstrated experience leading survey crews and directing field activities.
· Proficiency with GNSS survey equipment, including RTK and VRS workflows.
· Proficiency operating robotic total stations and survey data collectors.
· Proficiency with Trimble Access software.
· Proficiency with Trimble Business Center (TBC).
· Experience performing construction staking and layout activities.
· Experience processing survey data, performing calculations, and preparing survey deliverables.
· Ability to independently plan, organize, and execute survey projects with limited supervision.
· Strong understanding of survey control, field procedures, and measurement accuracy standards.
· Experience performing QA/QC reviews of survey data and deliverables.
· Ability to read and interpret survey plans, construction drawings, maps, aerial imagery, and project documentation.
· Strong problem-solving, organizational, and project planning skills.
· Effective verbal and written communication skills.
· Willingness to travel to project sites and perform field work in varying weather conditions.
· Ability to perform the physical demands associated with outdoor field surveying activities.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
· Associate degree or coursework in Surveying, Geomatics, Civil Engineering Technology, GIS, Geography, or a related field.
· Experience producing survey deliverables independently from field collection through final product.
· Proficiency with AutoCAD.
· Proficiency with Civil 3D.
· Experience with GIS software, including ArcGIS or QGIS.
· Experience with utility, pipeline, energy, or infrastructure projects.
· Experience supporting subsurface utility engineering (SUE) projects.
· FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate.
· Experience with drone-based surveying or mapping technologies.
· Experience coordinating utility investigations and utility conflict resolution efforts.

Pay: $34.00 - $45.00 per hour
