Workplace Introduction
Iowa Association of Municipal Utilities (IAMU) represents more than 750 municipal electric, gas, water, and broadband utilities statewide, and maintains a marketing relationship with more than 185 associate member businesses. IAMU represents its members before the Iowa Legislatures, administers mutual aid programs, offers job training and safety programs, co-sponsors the Iowa Public Agency Investment Trust, and sponsors the Safety Group Insurance Program.
Position Purpose
The Electric Training Specialist is responsible for planning, coordinating, and scheduling training workshops for Power Line workers from apprentice to journeyman skill levels; being the point of contact for the apprenticeship training program; reviewing and creating training materials; conducting annual safety training for members and being subject matter experts.
Job Functions
- · Build and maintain long-term relationships to ensure member satisfaction and retention
- · Plan, coordinate and schedule annual electric training workshops and conferences
- · Conduct annual safety training at member facilities
- · Assist in delivering National Center for Construction and Research (NCCER) (crane) training and conducting skill assessments while maintaining certification as a skills assessment proctor
- · Support requests for training from other entities
- Review, revise and create training materials used for safety meetings and apprenticeship training
- Support requests from members regarding the operation, maintenance, and assessment of their electric infrastructure
- Conduct utility crew observations to evaluate safety practices and work processes, provide constructive feedback at the job site, and prepare written reports with recommendations for utility management
- Actively participate and guide Electric Safety and Training Committee and Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee meetings
- Act as a point of contact and assist with operation of the IAMU Apprenticeship Training Program
- Conduct accident investigations
- Coordinate and support Mutual Aid Program activities, including communication and deployment of resources when needed

- Perform other related duties as assigned to support the organization’s mission and objectives
Working Conditions
- Provide instructional training to apprentices per the IAMU Apprenticeship Training program (on-the-job training, technical support, etc.)
- Various outdoor work activities are sometimes performed during adverse weather conditions
- Will require travel and some amount of overnight lodging
Requirements
- Successful completion of a formal Line Maintainer apprenticeship (registered with the Department of Labor), or minimum of ten years of experience performing the work duties and activities common to the electric utility industry
- Class A Commercial Driver’s License (with Air Brake Endorsement), applicants will be required to obtain within six months of hire
- Certified in CPR, First Aid and AED unit
- Demonstrated proficiency in performing overhead and underground line construction to conform with regulatory requirements. Ability to perform live and de-energized maintenance work while using live line tools and equipment. Diagnose and troubleshoot system issues effectively. Working knowledge of
- National Electric Code (NEC), National Electric Safety Code (NESC), Iowa State Electrical Code and other related electric utility codes
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal plus reading comprehension and mathematical skills and the ability to work independently and collaborate with others
- NCCER Certification is preferred. IAMU will provide training and support for candidates without certification, and certification is required within six months of employment
Physical Demands
- Sitting: up to 1 hour at a time at desk or while driving
- Standing: up to 1 hour at time
- Walking: walk throughout IAMU facility and campus
- Lifting: lift up to 40lbs from floor to desk height, desk height to floor
- Carrying: various items weighing up to 40 pounds short distances
- Pushing: up to 40lbs while using a cart to transport food and supplies
- Hand Coordination: bilateral hand coordination to write, use keyboard, mouse and telephone, and handle paperwork
- Environment: various outdoor work activities are sometimes performed during adverse weather conditions
- Ability to operate equipment commonly used in the electric utility industry

Compensation and Benefits
- Salary is anticipated to be $95,000 to $115,000 annually
