Step into a pivotal leadership role where you will own the financial backbone of a fast-scaling, sales-driven construction business. This is a high-impact position with CFO-level scope, where your discipline in numbers, controls, and reporting will directly shape profitability, growth decisions, and operational accountability. You will join a team that expects you to hold the line on accuracy and build the financial infrastructure the company needs to scale.

About the Role:

As Construction Controller, you will own the full accounting and reporting function across multiple locations, ensuring timely, accurate financial close and job-level visibility for all projects. You will design and refine the close process, job costing framework, and reporting cadence, providing the CEO and leadership team with reliable data to drive decisions. Your work will anchor cash flow management, margin protection, and compliance while building a scalable financial system for the future.

Key Responsibilities:

Own the monthly close process, moving from 15 to 10 business days, and produce consolidated reporting packages by location, including P&L, balance sheet, cash flow, job cost summary, WIP schedule, AR aging, and commission reconciliation.
Build and maintain annual budgets by location and consolidated, and maintain a rolling 13-week cash flow forecast to support planning and liquidity management.
Establish and maintain project-level job costing for all active jobs, tracking actual versus estimated costs by code and flagging margin erosion before project close.
Own the monthly work-in-progress schedule, ensuring accurate overbilling and underbilling recognition across all open projects and supporting bonding and external reporting needs.
Manage accounts receivable across all locations, including AR aging, Days Sales Outstanding tracking, insurance supplement billing reconciliation, and coordinating collections with project managers.
Coordinate lien notices and lien waiver releases with operations to protect the company’s financial position and ensure compliance with contract requirements.
Maintain commission accruals tied to gross profit at job close, including draw and clawback tracking, and ensure accurate posting and reconciliation of commission-related entries.
Oversee full-cycle multi-state payroll compliance, ensuring accurate processing, tax filings, and adherence to state-specific regulations across all operating states.
Serve as QuickBooks Online system owner, managing the chart of accounts, Classes and Locations structure, user permissions, and integrations, and ensuring clean data flow from the CRM into accounting.
Validate job-level data accuracy, assess whether current systems meet long-term reporting needs, and recommend upgrades or ERP migrations as the company scales.
Coordinate with the outside CPA firm on tax preparation, year-end adjustments, multi-state filings, and bonding requirements, providing timely WIP schedules and financial statements.
Collaborate cross-functionally with the CEO, sales leadership, project managers, and operations to explain financial results, drive accountability, and support decision-making.

Key Requirements:

Located in, or willing to relocate to Kearneysville, WV.
Three to seven years of construction industry accounting experience, with roofing or storm restoration experience strongly preferred.
Proven ownership of a work-in-progress schedule, including building, maintaining, and explaining WIP rather than simply pulling system reports.
Hands-on experience with QuickBooks Online, specifically with Projects and Classes/Locations for multi-branch reporting.
Demonstrated ownership of accounts receivable in a project-based billing environment, including AR aging and collections coordination.
Experience managing multi-state payroll compliance across at least two states, including tax and regulatory requirements.
Strong financial reporting and analysis skills, with demonstrated ability to produce and interpret P&L, balance sheet, cash flow, and job cost reporting.
Proven experience in budgeting and cost control, including building annual budgets and managing cash flow forecasts.
Solid understanding of construction project accounting, job cost tracking, and variance analysis, with the ability to identify and explain margin movements.
Working knowledge of GAAP, internal controls, and regulatory compliance relevant to construction and multi-state operations.
High proficiency with ERP or accounting software, particularly QuickBooks Online, and comfort working with integrated CRM or field platforms.
Strong cross-functional communication skills, with the ability to explain financials clearly and push back on leadership and operations when required by the numbers.

Desirable Skills:

CPA or CMA credential; strong non-credentialed candidates with a robust construction accounting track record will be considered.
Experience tracking commissions for a sales-driven contractor, including draws, clawbacks, and gross-profit-based splits.
Experience integrating a CRM or field platform with QuickBooks Online and managing data integrity between systems.
Familiarity with insurance supplement billing and its impact on AR, revenue recognition, and job profitability.
Experience evaluating or migrating from QuickBooks Online to a construction-focused ERP and supporting system selection and implementation.
Background in risk management and internal controls design within a growing construction or contracting environment.
Experience with contract and change order administration from a financial perspective, including billing, WIP impact, and margin tracking.

Qualifications:

CPA or CMA strongly preferred, though not mandatory for candidates with exceptional construction accounting experience.
Additional coursework or certification in construction accounting, project accounting, or financial management is an advantage.
Evidence of continuing professional education in areas such as GAAP updates, multi-state payroll, or construction finance systems is beneficial.
