Job Summary
An IT Business Data Analyst is a business-facing data professional who bridges business knowledge and enterprise data architecture. This role partners closely with Data Architects, Data Engineers, and business stakeholders to define, document, and govern enterprise data. Responsibilities include translating business concepts into governed data definitions, ensuring clarity around data meaning, lineage, ownership, and reportability, and contributing to the establishment of trusted, high-quality data foundations through data cataloging, data dictionaries, and governance practices. Scope, autonomy, and leadership expectations vary by level.
This position reports to the IT Data Platform Manager and is positioned as drives deliverables, operates independently.
Duties and Responsibilities/Essential Functions
- Drives cross-functional partnership with Data Architecture, Data Engineering, and IT Platform leadership to define and evolve enterprise data specifications, data products, and reporting structures aligned to business strategy and governance standards.
- Drive requirements definition and alignment across business domains, engaging senior stakeholders and SMEs to resolve ambiguity, challenge assumptions, and ensure consistency in data definitions and reportability.
- Establish and enforce standards for enterprise data artifacts, including data dictionaries, business definitions, domains, and business rules, ensuring consistency, scalability, and usability across domains.
- Act as a domain and cross-domain data steward leader, ensuring alignment to enterprise naming standards, governance policies, and consistent definitions; mentor and guide other analysts and stewards in best practices.
- Drive identification, prioritization, and resolution of data quality and data definition issues, driving root cause analysis and partnering with Data Owners and Engineering to implement sustainable fixes.
- Define and standardize Data Transfer Specifications and mapping practices, ensuring reusable, scalable patterns for source-to-target mappings, transformation logic, and data lineage across systems.
- Drive enterprise data catalog adoption and quality, establishing expectations for business context, data classification, stewardship, and usage guidance to improve discoverability and trust in data assets.
- Facilitate and lead strategic working sessions across business and technical teams, aligning on current-state and future-state data models, resolving cross-domain dependencies, and enabling cohesive data product design.
- Ensure enterprise alignment on data classification and reportability standards, including governance of sensitive and regulated data (e.g., PII, PHI, PCI), in partnership with security, compliance, and governance teams.
- Translate complex business needs into scalable, enterprise-ready data specifications, ensuring alignment with medallion architecture (Bronze, Silver, Gold) and downstream data product and analytics requirements.
- Influence data architecture and governance decisions by providing deep business context, identifying gaps, and recommending improvements that enhance data quality, usability, and business value.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or related field.
- Minimum 5+ years of experience as a Business Analyst, Data Analyst, or Data Governance Analyst supporting enterprise data initiatives.
- Strong business domain knowledge with demonstrated ability to translate business concepts into structured data documentation.
- Hands-on experience creating and maintaining: data dictionaries, source-to-target mappings, and data catalogs or metadata repositories.
- Proven experience working with business subject matter experts.
- Experience in technical writing, with the ability to translate ambiguous business input into clear, structured documentation.
- Working knowledge of relational data concepts (tables, columns, keys, relationships) sufficient to collaborate effectively with Data Engineers.
- Ability to operate in an agile, evolving environment with changing requirements and priorities.
- Effective communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work across technical and business teams.
- Strong documentation and knowledge transfer capabilities such as process maps and user guides.
- Adaptability and flexibility in response to evolving technologies, organizational priorities, and agile delivery models.
- Prior role as a data steward or governance lead.
- Familiarity with Microsoft data and analytics tools, including Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, PowerBi.
- SharePoint or similar platforms for documentation and collaboration
- Certifications or training in Business Analysis, Data Governance, or Data Management (e.g., CBAP, CDMP, DAMA-DMBOK familiarity).
