Wake Industrial LLC – Junior Industrial Automation Technician
Wake Industrial LLC is seeking a full-time Junior Industrial Automation Technician to join our technical team in Cary, North Carolina.
This is a hands-on, developmental technical position working under Wake Industrial's Lead Automation Technician. The individual hired for this position will assist with the testing, troubleshooting, and repair of industrial automation equipment while being trained on Wake Industrial's specific products, equipment, and procedures.
We do not expect the person hired for this position to already know everything we do. We are looking for someone with a strong electrical foundation, excellent work ethic, mechanical and technical aptitude, and a genuine willingness to learn.
Previous experience with industrial drives, servo motors, VFDs, controls, HMIs, or similar industrial automation equipment is a major advantage and will help a candidate progress more quickly within the position, but this specific experience is not required.
What We Are Looking For
The most important qualities for this position are electrical competency, work ethic, reliability, attention to detail, and willingness to learn.
Candidates must have a strong working understanding of electricity and be comfortable working in an industrial electrical environment involving DC systems up to 240 VDC and three-phase AC systems up to 480 VAC.
Candidates must also be capable of reading and interpreting electrical schematics and technical documentation. Before power is applied to equipment, the technician must understand how to verify voltage requirements, wiring configurations, electrical connections, and other information necessary to safely test the equipment without creating a safety hazard or damaging the unit.
Because we work with expensive industrial electronic equipment, we are looking for someone who understands the importance of checking first and energizing second. If something is unclear, we expect the technician to stop, research the equipment, consult documentation, or ask the Lead Technician rather than guessing.
Electrical Competency
Candidates should have previous electrical training and/or verifiable hands-on experience with higher-voltage electrical systems.
Electrical competency will be evaluated during the interview and hiring process. Candidates should be prepared to discuss and demonstrate their understanding of:
- DC electrical systems up to 240 VDC
- Three-phase AC electrical systems up to 480 VAC
- Electrical schematics and wiring diagrams
- Proper use of electrical testing equipment
- Identifying voltage and power requirements
- Electrical troubleshooting
- Safe procedures for working around higher-voltage equipment
- Proper verification before energizing electrical equipment
Relevant electrical certifications, licenses, trade-school education, apprenticeship training, employer training records, or similar credentials are strongly preferred and should be provided if available.
However, certification alone does not establish competency. Candidates must be able to demonstrate an actual working understanding of electricity and electrical safety during the hiring process.
Job Responsibilities
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Work directly under and assist Wake Industrial's Lead Automation Technician
- Learn Wake Industrial's testing, troubleshooting, and repair procedures
- Assist with testing industrial servo drives, motors, VFDs, controllers, HMIs, and related industrial automation equipment
- Read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, nameplates, and technical documentation
- Verify voltage requirements, wiring configurations, connections, and other electrical information before equipment is energized
- Assist with troubleshooting electrical, electronic, and electromechanical equipment
- Learn proper procedures for testing unfamiliar industrial equipment
- Assist with maintaining and organizing Wake Industrial's testing and repair station
- Work with the Lead Technician and management to develop and document testing and repair procedures
- Research unfamiliar products and manufacturers when necessary
- Follow established electrical and workplace safety procedures
- Develop a working knowledge of the industrial automation manufacturers and product lines sold by Wake Industrial
- Take on additional testing, troubleshooting, and repair responsibilities as knowledge and competency develop
Training and Development
This position is designed for someone who already possesses a solid electrical foundation but wants to develop further into industrial automation testing, troubleshooting, and repair.
Wake Industrial will provide hands-on training on our specific equipment and procedures. Initially, the technician will work closely with and under the direction of our Lead Automation Technician.
As the employee demonstrates competency and develops their knowledge, they will be given additional responsibilities and opportunities to perform more advanced testing and troubleshooting.

Preferred Experience – Major Advantage
Previous industrial automation experience is not required, but experience in any of the following areas will be considered a significant advantage:
- Industrial servo drives
- Servo motors
- Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs)
- Industrial motor controls
- Industrial electrical maintenance
- Industrial control systems
- HMIs and controllers
- Industrial electronics
- Electrical troubleshooting and diagnostics
- Testing or repairing industrial equipment
Candidates with previous industrial drive, control, or motor experience will likely be able to progress more quickly and take on advanced responsibilities sooner.

Technical ability is important, but work ethic and reliability are equally important for this position.
The person hired must be willing to show up consistently, arrive on time, work hard throughout the day, listen to instruction, and actively learn.
