Full Job Description

Position Summary

The Activities Director is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing a comprehensive therapeutic recreation and social activities program that promotes residents' physical, emotional, cognitive, social, and psychological well-being. The Activities Director will create meaningful opportunities for engagement, independence, recovery, community integration, and quality of life for residents, including those with serious mental illness, behavioral health needs, substance use histories, anxiety, depression, and other psychiatric diagnoses.

The Activities Director works collaboratively with nursing, case management, administration, dietary, transportation, and community providers to ensure activities meet the diverse needs, preferences, abilities, and goals of all residents while maintaining compliance with New York State Adult Home and Assisted Living Program regulations.

Duties

Program Development and Implementation
Develop, coordinate, and maintain a monthly activities calendar that includes social, recreational, educational, cultural, spiritual, wellness, and community-based programming.
Provide a variety of group and individual activities designed to support resident independence, recovery, self-esteem, socialization, and emotional wellness.
Develop specialized programming for residents with behavioral health diagnoses, including anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, PTSD, and substance use disorders.
Encourage resident participation through person-centered engagement and motivational approaches.
Conduct resident interest assessments and incorporate resident preferences into programming.
Coordinate resident council meetings and assist residents in voicing concerns, suggestions, and preferences.
Facilitate therapeutic groups, discussion groups, current events, life skills, wellness education, and recreational activities.
Organize community outings, special events, holiday celebrations, and intergenerational activities.

Behavioral Health Support

Foster a recovery-oriented, trauma-informed, and stigma-free environment.
Recognize changes in resident behavior, mood, cognition, or participation and communicate concerns to nursing and case management staff.
Collaborate with psychiatric providers, social workers, care managers, and community agencies to support resident engagement and treatment goals.
Assist in reducing social isolation and promoting positive peer interactions.
Utilize de-escalation and redirection techniques when appropriate.

Documentation and Compliance

Maintain accurate records of resident participation, attendance, assessments, and activity outcomes.
Complete required documentation in accordance with facility policies and New York State regulations.
Maintain activity calendars, resident interest surveys, and program evaluations.
Assist with preparation for Department of Health surveys and audits.
Ensure activities program complies with Adult Home and Assisted Living Program regulatory requirements.

Education

One of the following is preferred:

Associate's or Bachelor's Degree in Recreation Therapy, Therapeutic Recreation, Gerontology, Psychology, Human Services, Social Work, Recreational Management, Behavioral Health, or a related field;

Experience

Minimum one (1) year experience in activities programming, recreation, behavioral health, human services, assisted living, adult care, psychiatric rehabilitation, or related field preferred.
Experience working with adults with mental illness, substance use disorders, cognitive impairments, or other behavioral health conditions strongly preferred.
Supervisory experience preferred.
Experience with documentation, care planning, and regulatory compliance preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Understanding of behavioral health and recovery-oriented care principles.
Knowledge of resident rights, confidentiality, and person-centered care practices.
Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
Ability to engage diverse resident populations with varying physical, cognitive, and psychiatric needs.
Ability to work collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team.
Proficiency with basic computer applications and documentation systems.

Physical Requirements

Ability to stand, walk, bend, lift, and assist with activity setup and transportation of supplies.
Ability to accompany residents on outings and community activities.
Ability to respond appropriately during emergency situations.

Schedule

Full-Time Position (37.5–40 hours per week)
Some evenings, weekends, and holidays as required to support resident programming and special events.
