Full Job Description

Position Overview

We are seeking a skilled and experienced CNC Machining Center Manager to oversee the operation of eight CNC machining centers — four Fadal and four Haas vertical milling machines — within our steel manufacturing facility. This position plays a critical role in producing precision-machined steel components that meet strict metallurgical, dimensional, and surface finish specifications. The ideal candidate combines deep machining expertise with the leadership ability to drive production performance, quality compliance, and team development in a demanding steel environment.

Key ResponsibilitiesMachine Operations & Production

Direct the daily setup, operation, and scheduling of four Fadal and four Haas CNC machining centers to meet steel component production targets
Manage job sequencing and machine loading to maximize uptime and throughput across all eight machines
Oversee tooling selection, carbide insert management, and cutting parameter optimization for machining hardened and structural steel grades including A36, 4140, 4340, D2, and H13
Monitor cycle times, tool wear, and chip load to maintain efficiency and protect machine spindles from premature wear in high-hardness steel cuts
Coordinate fixture and work holding setups appropriate for steel stock, including vises, tombstones, and custom fixturing for complex geometries

Quality & Compliance

Ensure all machined steel components meet dimensional tolerances per engineering drawings and GD&T callouts
Enforce in-process inspection protocols including CMM checks, surface roughness measurement, and hardness verification where required
Lead first-article inspection (FAI) activities and maintain PPAP documentation for new steel component programs
Maintain compliance with internal quality management systems (ISO 9001 or IATF 16949 as applicable) and customer-specific requirements
Manage non-conformance reports (NCRs), root cause analysis, and corrective actions related to machining defects

Team Leadership & Safety

Supervise, train, and mentor CNC machine operators on Fadal and Haas controls, safe steel machining practices, and shop procedures
Conduct daily toolbox talks and enforce all PPE requirements, including face shields, steel-toed boots, and chip guard protocols specific to steel machining
Perform or coordinate performance reviews, schedule adherence tracking, and workforce planning across shifts
Foster a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and safe work practices

Maintenance & Equipment

Coordinate with maintenance personnel on preventive maintenance schedules for all eight machining centers to minimize unplanned downtime
Troubleshoot machine alarms, axis faults, coolant system issues, and spindle performance problems on Fadal and Haas platforms
Manage coolant concentration, filtration, and disposal in compliance with environmental regulations applicable to steel machining operations
Maintain accurate machine logs, downtime records, and maintenance work orders in the CMMS system

Continuous Improvement

Identify and lead Kaizen and Lean initiatives to reduce cycle times, scrap rates, and setup times on steel machining operations
Collaborate with process engineers and programmers to optimize G-code programs for steel-specific cutting strategies
Track and report KPIs including OEE, scrap percentage, on-time delivery, and cost per part to plant leadership

Qualifications Required

5+ years of hands-on CNC machining experience, with significant time spent machining carbon steel, alloy steel, or tool steel
Direct operating experience on both Fadal (legacy controls) and Haas CNC controls
Proficiency in G-code and M-code programming; ability to edit programs at the machine control
Strong ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, GD&T, and material specifications for steel components
Demonstrated leadership or management experience in a production machining environment
Working knowledge of tooling and cutting parameters for ferrous metals, including appropriate speeds, feeds, and coolant strategies

Preferred

Associate's degree or technical certification in Machining Technology, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related field — or equivalent hands-on experience
Familiarity with ISO 9001, IATF 16949, or AS9100 quality management systems
Experience with ERP or MES systems for production tracking and material traceability
Exposure to steel heat treatment processes and how they affect machinability (annealing, hardening, stress relieving)
OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 General Industry certification

Work Environment

This is a full-time, on-site position based in our steel manufacturing facility. The work environment includes exposure to metal chips, cutting fluids, coolant mist, and elevated noise levels typical of CNC machining operations. Candidates must be comfortable standing for extended periods on a concrete shop floor and working in close proximity to operating machinery. Steel-toed boots, safety glasses, and hearing protection are required at all times on the shop floor. Shift flexibility may be required during peak production periods or to cover second-shift operations.
